80s Glam/Metal Vocal Showdown #15: Hogarth vs Nicholls
« on: September 02, 2013, 11:08:09 AM »
Yes, yes... neither are glam or metal.  And yes, H-era Marillion started in '89, so putting Hogarth in this group is a bit of a stretch.  However, this is enough of a grey area that I'm going to cheat a little.  Since both are more neo-prog, and both Marillion and IQ get enough love around here, this seemed to be the best place to put them.  Really hoping I don't slay RJ's other favorite singer.  I've just been starting to get deep into IQ's discog, and man is it the fucking cat's meow.  Total package this band is.  Couple that with Marillion = Fish for me, this was a pretty easy vote.

Nicholls.

H. Even though his career as a lyricist seems to be set to reading my mind and writing just the right thing to make me say "ouch." (See The Sky Above The Rain for the latest example.)

Hmm. Never heard Nicholl.
And Hogarth- well, I'm a Fish man. Not a fan of his voice really. A bit too "art school wimp" for me and I fell very out of love with Marillion after Fish's exit.

Neither I guess.

Nichols is probably my no. 1 all time vocalist/lyricist. His words and voice resonate with my soul like no other.

H is quite the bad ass though, but Nichols by miles and miles.

Hogarth's voice is always great to me. Especially for going to sleep purposes.
i don't even like dt but i had keyboard and an ipad so what the fuck
Jordan is actually DT's tax advisor. He just happens to do their taxes on stage, that's why he has that iPad there.

I'm surprised you feel so strongly about Nichols. I have Dark Matter, and half the time I really enjoy him, but the other half his style and diction just really bug me.

Opinions, I suppose.

I haven't listened to much IQ but I didn't really like the vocals at all. Hogarth is one of my favorite singers so he easily gets my vote.

Nicholls and not even close.

Fish vs Nicholls would have actually made me think for a bit; but I'd take Nicholls voice, and Fish's writing.

Well, I think between you, me and RJ, our votes should count for at least 5 each!

Never heard of this Nicholls guy, but if it was Marillion guy vs the sound of two Wookiees humping, I'd go with the Wookiees.

"art school wimp"

Thank you for coming up with the label I have never been able to come up with myself. I hate this vocal style. I'd put early Peter Gabriel in this camp too which is part of the reason I hate Genesis. And I think PG has an great voice and signing style, that he didn't exhibit until his solo career.

Opinions, I suppose.

Its 100% a personal thing. I know there are a shit ton of better singers out there than Nichols, but he is just that one that just clicks perfectly with me. When he hits his notes, it literally how I feel inside. I can't explain it any other way.

Perfect match up though Chad, neither are standout pure vocalist, both more using emotion and inflection to make up for the lack of power.

You know this AIN'T 80s metal/glam when both JJ and Coz have to abstain.  TAC too.  Who's next?  Lowdz?   :lol

Yeah, I'm just sorry both your fave 80s voices got beat up.
