some really cool songs so far this round.  Shooting for results Friday night.

Again, sorry for the delay this round.  That illness had me out of commission for a few days.

ok, it's Friday (actually Saturday now) and where are the stinking rankings?  That's what you are all thinking right?  Wife was sick today (must be going around the family) and I took care of the kids pretty much all day and haven't had time to do all the write-ups.  Listening is done, and most of the writing is done, but I'm beat and have to go to bed.  Rankings tomorrow!

I disagree.  You should be stressed.  You should feel terrible, even worse than from being sick.  Keeping us waiting like this.  You're a horrible, horrible human being.

Dude, I know what it's like... jingle.family just went through the same thing a couple of weeks ago.  Mrs.jingle was completely laid out for a week and a half (and I was traveling through some of it).  I started to get it, but nipped it in the bud fortunately... still have the sniffles.

You've been running a good roulette, so no need to sweat it.

Round 6 Results.  Some really cool songs in this round!

Rank #9, 1 point: Onno - Strapping Young Lad - Shitstorm - While this was technically awesome and a display in dexterity and stamina, the song was a little too extreme for what I was looking for.  Devin Townsend is a really weird artist for me.  I LOVE some of his stuff like Addicted and Terria, but some of the more extreme work like this is just not my thing (at least for now - who knows how my tastes will change in the future).

Rank #8, 2 points: Dark Castle - The Black Dahlia Murder - A Shrine To Madness - Pretty ridiculous speed and technicality from the drummer.  Vocals/lyrics bordered on comedy for me.  I really wasn't expecting that guitar solo when it kind of appeared out of nowhere, which was pretty cool.  Overall this was a bit too extreme at the expense of more lyrical/melodic drumming I am a fan of - in this way it was very similar to the SYL song.

Rank #7, 3 points: Lolzeez - The Mars Volta - Day Of The Baphomets - Are all their songs like this?  Goodness, the thought of making it through an entire album of stuff this energetic and zany has me sweating a bit.  Pretty cool Latin flavor in the percussion.  The vocals are just too "on" for me to enjoy through an entire song this long it seems.

Rank #6, 4 points: LieLowTheWantedMan - Gong - Master Builder - Whoa, really spaced out, man.  Drumming has a very mesmerizing quality to it.  This was a really cool song and I liked most of it, but thought the sax took away from my enjoyment of the song a bit.

Rank #5, 5 points: kári - Sigur Rós - untitled #8 (Popplagiđ) - Very dreamlike first part - in a way, this section really reminded me of the Jeff Buckley song you sent me.  I liked the shift to a slightly darker tone and tribal beat about halfway through.  Then another great shift of intensity with the drums a couple of minutes later.

Rank #4, 6 points: Elite - Oceansize - Massive Bereavement - For some reason it was very difficult for me to review/rate/rank this song.  I've listened to it a few times but there is quite a bit going on and it seems like one of those songs I need to spend a great deal of time with to have it really grow on me.  For now it ends up close to the middle of the pack as I don't dislike it, but the initial impression isn't quite as favorable as the some of the other songs this round.

Rank #3, 7 points: Scorpion - Animals as Leaders - The Price of Everything and the Value of Nothing - Sweet drum fills and transitions.  Nice groove.  I guess it was an artistic decision, but the heavy guitars are really buried in the mix.  I like that clean lead however.  The drum machine was cool at first, but it kinda loses me after a while.  Wish they would have faded it out and just had the actual drummer going crazy (assuming there was even a real drummer on this song?).

Rank #2, 8 points: jingle.boy - Ice Age - To Say Goodbye Part III: Still Here - I love the high energy opening.  Great production and separation between the instruments.  Cool guitar work underneath the vocals.  Also like those keyboard runs near the end of the song.  Really liked this one!

Rank #1, 9 points: MoraWintersoul - Apocalyptica - Fisheye - Nice!  I knew of these guys, but to be honest, I had no clue what else they did besides Metallica covers.  I knew they did other stuff/originals but had no idea it was quite this good.  Very cool melodic grooviness here.  This was awesome!

Ranking after Round 6

MoraWintersoul - 41
Elite - 38
jingle.boy - 38
Onno - 32
Scorpion - 32
LieLowTheWantedMan - 28
Dark Castle - 21
Lolzeez - 21
kári - 19

Quick note on the upcoming Round 7.  To be honest I have been looking forward to this round the entire roulette.  I LOVE a great riff.  And as a reminder, here is what I wrote in the OP:

"For the riff round, here are a few songs that really get me going - "Crazy Train", "Book of Thel", pretty much anything from Pornograffitti, "Evolution" (Symphony X), the chorus riff from "Fallen" (Symphony X), and the chorus riff from "Sentenced" (Circle II Circle).  Listen to those and you'll get the idea.  Grooving, powerful riffs and off-the-rails awesomeness that just barely holds together due to all the speed and pyrotechnics."

This is really the only round where I actually have something in mind, BUT if you have something you can send that might not fit those parameters but still blow me away, please send it.

Woot woot! Apo had a couple of amazing albums when they stepped out of the cover-band-schtick. Don't get me wrong, I loved their covers, but they can write a really good song. I didn't like their latest album much though.

Riffy stuff coming your way!

Round 7 Results.

Rank #9, 1 point: Onno - Alestorm - Shipwricked - Maybe you shouldn't send songs or artists with "storm" in them. :lol  Fun song, but not really into pirate music.  It seemed to be mostly just chugging rhythms in the guitar.  And a bit repetitive overall.  I seem to remember trying a couple of songs from this band several months ago and nothing grabbed me then either.

Rank #8, 2 points: kári  - Dinosaur Jr - Sludgefeast - Nice heavy groove, although maybe a little too "plodding" for what I really like.  And the vocals were kind of, I don't know, "Dylan-esqe?", which for me isn't a good thing.  The descent into noise was "interesting", but when the song comes back in, I really liked that section (last minute or so).  That part really saved the song for me.

Rank #7, 3 points: MoraWintersoul - Cloudkicker - Dysphoria - I was hoping this song would go to a few more places than it did.  It was promising at first as I liked the sound of everything, but it just kind of felt like the same tempo, same dynamics, same feel, etc. as the song moved along.  The single-note/chord riffing is ok for a bit, but this song has it in spades.  But I am interested enough in this guy to check out the other albums he has released.

Rank #6, 4 points: Scorpion - Trivium - Shogun - I like the intro where the intro and drum beat kind of find each other, and the cool riff into and during the first verse.  I also like the vocals and melodies in the chorus.  Nice little bluesy solo.  So I guess overall I just "liked" stuff but never really "loved" anything about the song.  I hate to tell you this, but had you sent the Accept song this round, you probably would have won it easily.  It had a kickass riff.

Rank #5, 5 points: Dark Castle - Holy Grail - Hollow Ground - First off, I really like the vocals.  Maybe slightly disappointed in the riff here, seemed like mostly basic chugging in the verses/transitions and simple chords in the chorus, although the little turnaround at the end of each chorus is pretty cool.  The bridge riff is really nice.

Rank #4, 6 points: Lolzeez - Rainbow - Stargazer - Obviously familiar with the song, but only as a cover version, so this gets a pass.  This riff definitely gets a plus in the attitude department.  I see why this is such a classic in the genre and has been an influence on so many bands.  Cool imagery and sort of a middle-eastern vibe at times, especially around the solo section.

Rank #3, 7 points: Elite - Firewind - Into the Fire - Decent enough riffage.  Nice power in the intro, and the speed really kicks in during the verses.  It's a really cool song, but it's missing something that I just can't pinpoint, but it still gets the job done this round.

Rank #2, 8 points: jingle.boy - Triumph - Headed For Nowhere - Kind of close to what I was looking for, though maybe a little tame as a whole.  Chorus reminded me of Journey or something like that, and I'm looking for more power, more attitude, more . . . balls, I guess.  The solo section was awesome, however!

Rank #1, 9 points: LieLowTheWantedMan - Melvins - Revolve - Really cool groove to this song.  It has sort of a stripped down sound (particularly in the verses), but still comes across pretty heavy.  I think the attitude of the riff is what makes this one rise to the top.  The little tag section at the end is pretty cool as well.  Really digging this one!

Ranking after Round 7
