Round 7 Results.
Rank #9, 1 point: Onno - Alestorm - Shipwricked - Maybe you shouldn't send songs or artists with "storm" in them.
Fun song, but not really into pirate music. It seemed to be mostly just chugging rhythms in the guitar. And a bit repetitive overall. I seem to remember trying a couple of songs from this band several months ago and nothing grabbed me then either.
Rank #8, 2 points: kári - Dinosaur Jr - Sludgefeast - Nice heavy groove, although maybe a little too "plodding" for what I really like. And the vocals were kind of, I don't know, "Dylan-esqe?", which for me isn't a good thing. The descent into noise was "interesting", but when the song comes back in, I really liked that section (last minute or so). That part really saved the song for me.
Rank #7, 3 points: MoraWintersoul - Cloudkicker - Dysphoria - I was hoping this song would go to a few more places than it did. It was promising at first as I liked the sound of everything, but it just kind of felt like the same tempo, same dynamics, same feel, etc. as the song moved along. The single-note/chord riffing is ok for a bit, but this song has it in spades. But I am interested enough in this guy to check out the other albums he has released.
Rank #6, 4 points: Scorpion - Trivium - Shogun - I like the intro where the intro and drum beat kind of find each other, and the cool riff into and during the first verse. I also like the vocals and melodies in the chorus. Nice little bluesy solo. So I guess overall I just "liked" stuff but never really "loved" anything about the song. I hate to tell you this, but had you sent the Accept song this round, you probably would have won it easily. It had a kickass riff.
Rank #5, 5 points: Dark Castle - Holy Grail - Hollow Ground - First off, I really like the vocals. Maybe slightly disappointed in the riff here, seemed like mostly basic chugging in the verses/transitions and simple chords in the chorus, although the little turnaround at the end of each chorus is pretty cool. The bridge riff is really nice.
Rank #4, 6 points: Lolzeez - Rainbow - Stargazer - Obviously familiar with the song, but only as a cover version, so this gets a pass. This riff definitely gets a plus in the attitude department. I see why this is such a classic in the genre and has been an influence on so many bands. Cool imagery and sort of a middle-eastern vibe at times, especially around the solo section.
Rank #3, 7 points: Elite - Firewind - Into the Fire - Decent enough riffage. Nice power in the intro, and the speed really kicks in during the verses. It's a really cool song, but it's missing something that I just can't pinpoint, but it still gets the job done this round.
Rank #2, 8 points: jingle.boy - Triumph - Headed For Nowhere - Kind of close to what I was looking for, though maybe a little tame as a whole. Chorus reminded me of Journey or something like that, and I'm looking for more power, more attitude, more . . . balls, I guess. The solo section was awesome, however!
Rank #1, 9 points: LieLowTheWantedMan - Melvins - Revolve - Really cool groove to this song. It has sort of a stripped down sound (particularly in the verses), but still comes across pretty heavy. I think the attitude of the riff is what makes this one rise to the top. The little tag section at the end is pretty cool as well. Really digging this one!
