Round 4 Results (a day early! Yay!!)
Another strong round.
Rank #9, 1 point: LieLowTheWantedMan - Spiral Architect - Spinning - Hmm, I like the bass playing here, but the song as a whole is a little too chaotic for me to really get into it fully, even with multiple listens. Also, not a huge fan of the vocals. Unfortunately there were stronger songs and this one gets pushed to the bottom.
Rank #8, 2 points: Elite - Mr. Bungle - Squeeze Me Macaroni - Let's see, this was like listening to Primus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Beastie Boys . . . all at the same time. I'm . . . not sure what else to say. Definitely interesting and fun to listen to, but in the end I think there wasn't quite enough to make me like it musically or take the song more seriously than just a novelty.
Rank #7, 3 points: kári - The xx - Islands - Pretty minimalistic song, not bad. I like this type of electro-indie music much more than the somewhat under-produced sound (at least to me) you normally get.
Rank #6, 4 points: Dark Castle - Intronaut - Milk Leg - I like those spaced-out vocals. Some cool polyrythmic stuff going on too. I actually liked the last half of the song more than the first. Cool bass work, especially in the calm relaxed section, although I was hoping for a little more variation overall.
Rank #5, 5 points: Lolzeez - Rage Against The Machine - Take The Power Back - Really liked this one. Love that funky bass opening. Great groove. Cool bluesy guitar licks later in the song as well.
Rank #4, 6 points: MoraWintersoul - Sieges Even - Stigmata - Some Rushness here, especially that part before the first verse, it's particularly Hemispheres-like. I like those little bass runs. Nice progressive rock with a positive tone to it. I will say that this song has stuck in my head more than any other so far this roulette. I find myself singing the melodies from this song all the time.
Rank #3, 7 points: Scorpion - Trioscapes - Blast Off - Ah, some fusion goodness. Sorta? Progressive Jazz Metal? Is that a thing? Mad skills with all three guys here. The drummer is pretty insane. Love the bass chords during the sort of drummer-solo/breakdown section. But I did think going with the distorted bass tone was a bit questionable during the solo. Also on the downside, for jazzy stuff like this, I would prefer a stronger main theme or melody that the group either builds up to or states at the beginning before returning to near the end. Here I felt like they just jumped into some improvisation-like playing and stayed in that mode most of the way through. Really cool song though.
Rank #2, 8 points: Onno - Stick Men - Nude Ascending Staircase - Cool spacey proggy song with sort of a fusion edge to it. What can you say about Levin that hasn't been said. Master of the low end, especially the bass strings on the Chapman. The entire song was really cool, but my favorite part was the short bass lick at 2:48.
Rank #1, 9 points: jingle.boy - Thought Chamber - Sacred Treasure - I was kind of disappointed when the vocals came in, I was sort of hoping this was going to be an instrumental based on the intro. Then I realized it was the dude from Affector, so I was cool with it. Really dig that keyboard sound. I also like the guitar work going on underneath the vocals (during second verse or so). The only downside was the solo section being a bit predictable and not as interesting as the rest of the song to me. Overall it was an awesome song.
