80s Glam/Metal Vocal Showdown #10: Russell vs Midnight
« on: August 20, 2013, 09:33:11 PM »
I don't see a lot of discussion/chatter around here regarding Crimson Glory, but holy-mother-of-god is Transcendence a top notch album, highlighted by the god-like vocals of Midnight.  As much as I liked Great White in the 80s, they will forever be tarnished because of Long Island.  I just can't listen to their music anymore.  It's sad, because I really did like them in the 80s and 90s.  It's also kinda sad to see what Jack is doing now ... kinda Tate-like imo.

Midnight, hands down.  Depending on how many know his voice, this could (should) be a landslide.

Midnight. Transcendence is an amazing album, and Midnight is one of the primary reasons why.

Midnight by a landslide. If it wasn't for drugs and booze, Crimson Glory & Midnight could have been megastars. The first two CG albums are two of the best from the 80s.

Pretty much echo everythiing you said Chad, though I can and do still isten to 80s and 90s GW. They ar a shadow of what they once were now though.

Midnight. What a voice, and as you say, Transcendence is a beauty. I also really like Strange & Beautiful but it gets alot of flakk for not being very CG-like.

Midnight's the more impressive of the two but I just don't like his singing.

I've not followed Great White for a long time so I'm not up to speed with what Jack Russell is like now but I loved Once Bitten... and Hooked and liked his voice as it was back then.

I went with Jack Russell, because I've never heard Midnight, and Jack looked like he needed the sympathy vote.  Also, pretentious names turn me off.

I went and looked up Crimson Glory.  The first thing I see is a wikipedia result with the word "progressive" in it.  Strike one.

I looked up a video and while the guy has a decent voice, all I could think of was "Queensryche called, they'd like their singer ba... Actually, no, they don't".  Strike two.

Crimson Glory didn't write Mista Bone.  Strike three.

Ironically enough, Todd LaTorre fronted them for a few tours a while back.

Midnight had that "Sell Your Soul To The Devil" level of awesomeness as a singer. Sure, he sounded similar to Tate, but I vastly prefer Midnight. The dude had this silk-like feel to his voice, even with his higher notes, and he always sounded far more emotionally raw than Tate too. Just listen to "Lost Reflections".

Makes sense. :lol "Lonely" isn't a bad song IMO, but it's hardly Crimson Glory's finest moment or Midnight's for that matter. It's just the closest thing they ever had to a commercial hit. Check out this song, you might like a lot better. :tup At the very least, it shows how brilliant a singer Midnight was. The way it builds and builds. :metal

I think I liked Lonely better.  :lol

The only thing that comes to mind is a bit from the old Infocom game reboot of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".  You have to hear the second verse of Vogon poetry, in order to get the atomic vector plotter out of the glass case.  In order to hear the second verse, you have to tell the game "Enjoy poetry".  The game responds:

Quote
You realize that, although the Vogon poetry is indeed astoundingly bad, worse things happen at sea, and in fact, at school.  With an effort for which Hercules himself would have patted you on the back, you grit your teeth and enjoy the stuff.

Sorry, just not my bag, unfortunately.   :lol
