I suppose it's a good thing I'm starting a nice job as a student councilor in September, because if the rate of awesomeness stays equal to this, I'm going to be broke by the end of this roulette. (yeah, clichés, I know!
) But this first round was so ridiculously good that I found it hard to vote off anything. Well, there was one song I didn't really like, but the rest was pretty much awesome.
The way I'm doing this is as follows; I put all the songs in a playlist and just play them with shuffle on while doing other stuff (today I was playing video games for the first time in a year) and I'm writing some stuff down based on what I hear (without knowing what it is, or who it came from). Here's some samples of what I wrote down:
- 'awesome'
- 'fantastic groove'
- 'fuck yeah'
- 'HOLY SHIT'
- 'YES!'
Right, on to the songs submitted. Keep in mind
any band that has been used may NOT be used again!Straight on through to the next round:Participant: jingle.boy
Band: Flaming Row
Song: Rage of Despair
This right here is single-handedly the best song I have received in both this and the last roulette. Holy shit, I ordered the album, because I want to hear all of this. That was fucking fantastic!! Also, thanks a bunch for the very long accompaniment PM, I'll definitely check out the story when I get the album
Participant: Scorpion
Band: Evergrey
Song: Recreation Day
Your personal goal of 'better than last time' has been achieved just by sending this song. Why didn't you do so last time? Evergrey has been on my list of bands to check out for a long time, but I never actually did, because the band's name turned me off for some reason. This song convinced me I was an idiot for not doing so. Very, very nice!
Participant: kingshmegland
Band: Demians
Song: Sapphire
Well, that was an awesomely nice song! Pretty straight-forward, yet catchy and overall just awesome! I love how huge everything gets the instant the guitars kick in. Great chorus as well. I want to hear more from this guy (because apparently it's just one person? well he's awesome!) as well
Participant: Onno
Band: Barren Earth
Song: Forlorn Waves
Pretty much the heaviest song I received in this round, but I really like some melodic death metal occasionally and this band and song pull it off really well. Some of the best melodeath I've heard recently, awesome!
Participant: senecadawg2
Band: Allen/Lande
Song: The Showdown
A band/project I once downloaded all material from but then never actually went to listen to them. Well, I suppose I should have done so, because this is just some very nice straight-forward heavy metal featuring two of power/prog's well-known voices. Awesome stuff, I get to the rest of their work soon!
Participant: Lolzeez
Band: At The Drive-In
Song: Invalid Litter Dept.
When I this song first came round in this round of mostly heavy stuff, I was like 'what the hell!?'. This was arguably the weirdest song I have received this round, but boy is it groovy and funky. So yeah, I like The Mars Volta and weird stuff, so you got it totally right on this track. Awesome stuff!
---
Where it became a little more difficult:Participant: Dr. DTVT
Band: Fates Warning
Song: Life in Still Water
This will probably make you angry or something, but in a round full of exceptionally strong songs, this Fates Warning track just didn't do a lot to me. It's not that I disliked it, but I found nothing special about it either. Like I said, I do have one CD by the band (No Exit) and I listened to that and, based on that alone, I never bothered to check out the rest. I'm still not sure of whether I should now.
Participant: Nekov
Band: Frightened Rabbit
Song: Late March, Death March
Your Frightened Rabbit got a very close shave here.. What made it stand out above the two tracks eliminated was that it felt happy, being a fun upbeat song. I particularly loved the chorus and the fun things they did with vocals and will probably listened to the whole album. 'T was a fun song indeed, like you said!
---
Unfortunately eliminated:Participant: ?
Band: Bruce Soord and Jonas Renkse
Song: Stacked Naked
You were right about me liking The Pineapple Thief and while I do like Katatonia occasionally, I'm not really a fan of Jonas Renkse, because his voice is quite monotone and uninspiring. That was very different on this track, but still it's mainly his voice that puts me off. The music is nice though, with all the electronic stuff going on, but this is not really for me.
Participant: kári
Band: Fleet Foxes
Song: Grown Ocean
I'm sorry pal, but where you won the last Roulette with weird indie songs and post-rock, in this Roulette you're one of the first to go out.. Apparently the times have changed and people send a lot of awesome prog/metal and since that's what I listen to mainly, that's what I'll like more too. On Fleet Foxes; I have been forced to listen to them by a female friend of mine, but I really can't see what the fuzz is about. I find his voice in particular very annoying, but the purposefully 'bad' indie-production is also something I can't really stand. It seems you really like this song and I suppose I can see why, it just isn't for me.
---
I always say that I'll listen to 'almost anything' in music and while I hate it when other people say that, I have always believed it to be true in a way for me, because I do know and like a lot of stuff, but it turns out I definitely have my favourite genres here. Out of the 10 songs I got this round, the only three songs that were not prog/metal ended in the last three places, and although they weren't bad songs at all, they just didn't appeal to me as much. kári and ?, thanks for playing, sorry to kick both of you out so early. This is going to be a highly interesting ride, I can't wait to hear what you have in store for me next!
DEADLINE FOR ROUND 2: Friday 23:00 GMT (17:00 EST)
