Did that scat singing MM did in the studio vid was a drum part to any song? In the vid I just thought he mumbled out a drum part...

Right on the money.

wasteland

Maybe there's a scat/farcesque version of said song? :D

Any potentially cringe-worthy stuff from LaBrie? Like overstraining, overemphasizing syllables, or poor pronunciation.

To LaBrie's credit, I think he has gotten a lot better with it. Don't know if it's the coaching with Vendera but his latest solo album, you can CLEARLY hear what he sings.

Nice avatar! ;)

OT, I completely agree. Not only in his latest solo album but on the live performances, at least from last year, he did really well.

Hey cyberdrummer, how would you compare some of the best songs on Dream Theater to Breaking all Illusions? That is, how would Breaking all Illusions rank if it were on the new album (best on the album, somewhere in the middle?)

I think a more accurate question would be, how did his first impression of BAI rank compared to his first impressions of these songs.

LKap13

Sure.... I guess if he's kind enough he can answer both questions  ;)

I just don't think he can say with absolute certainty what his lasting value of the news songs will be, just yet.

LKap13

You're right about that. His answer to my questions won't definitively demonstrate much, but I'm still curious -- for example, if he says that he can't compare the two then that's fine; but if he says that on first listen he would put BAI somewhere in the middle, well then that's pretty exciting. Do you agree?

LKap13

I just think it's the best song off of ADTOE, if not the best since 8VM. But you're right, my question does presuppose that he likes BAI as much as I do. Either way, out of curiosity I'm sticking to my initial question

cyberdrummer

My first impressions of BAI were probably more favourable, but that's because it sounds a lot more like Dream Theater, if you know what I mean. This new album is different. As to where BAI would rank on the new album, that's impossible to say because my level of familiarity differs so much.

JDW89

I saw earlier in the thread (at least I think) that you mentioned the album was heavy, like TOT heavy or something else entirely?

Kotowboy

I have to say that Breaking All Illusions still hasn't clicked for me.

It's a good song, yes but I don't see it as "outstanding" as others do.

Same here.

But that's also why I wouldn't bother asking, "How does this song compare to this song for you?" because everyone's got a differing opinion on these forums.

Kotowboy

I'd be very surprised ( in both senses ) if Illumination Theory is as good as Octavarium.

IMO  Breaking All Illusions is the best track from ADTOE  , but that doesn't really say much cos' ADTOE is propably my least favourite DT album :P
But yeah, BAI has some good melodies!

I felt the same way about ADTOE after I listened thru is once or twice but after listening thru it a few more times I am really beginning to like it quite a bit.

How do you rank 8V (song)  in DT's catalog then ?  :o

noxon

i don't rank songs... any ranking made would be dependant on many factors which could change at any time. (mood, "fatigue" etc)

I don't know if this question has already been posted, but anyway...

Would you compare DT12 to Scenes From a Memory? I mean, in terms of "cinematic" feelings or something else.

noxon

#375
SFAM and DT is night and day in difference. There's no album that could compare to DT as such, though Images & Words, Awake or Falling into Infinity probably comes closer than any other album. (and i'm strictly speaking about what the album is like - I'm not talking about overall quality and how this album ranks)

Hmmm... That sounds promising to me!  :o

JPX

I apologize if this has been addressed already.

JP has mentioned recently that the new wave of progressive metal has influenced him to a degree. So are there any parts in the record where you see clear references to Periphery, BTBAM or Animals as Leaders?

The Enemy Inside has some djenty stuff.

Jaffa

Do you happen to recall whether or not there were any spoken word samples used on this album?

I'd prefer if they got influenced by Tesseract. There's a band people have to check out. Fantastic band.

Dark Castle

For me, Tesseract are one of those bands that sound really good, but aren't that remarkable, sounds a bit harsh, but I say that as a big fan of their first album, their second album just didn't really do anything for me.

I think both albums are equally good but they differ a lot. The second album is more melodic driven while the first one is more heavy and dramatic in some sence. I like their new singer.

Pretty certain there weren't.

And I'll back up Noxon when he says that SFAM and DT are completely different. I'll say it again (for the third or fourth time), this album doesn't sound like any other by the band.
