I swear to god we don't set them up for these pictures. hahaha They're like twins, just 7 years apart.

The darker one is Brandy (2yo) and the lighter is Halei (9yo). They're both Golden Doodles.
*snip*

What beautiful animals. Are they pretty bright too?

Athos is gorgeous but Fedra...holy shit, that's some serious, "daaaaaaaawwwww!"

Mastiffs are great! I love that 'look right through you' stare they commonly have. It's funny how unnerving it is to people who don't know dogs very well.  :)

Our Siberian Husky Dreyfuss, and our Malamute/Greater Swiss Mountain Dog mix, Lucy. Awesome dogs, but a handful.

Here is Dreyfuss...

Yeah, with that face she gets pretty much whatever she likes :). And if a person don't like dogs, we have no choice but to have her outside because she seems too intimidating sometimes, especially with that way these dogs have of asking for things, it seems they are growling but they are actually just being friendly, and they seem harmless but they do have their temper after all.

By the way, Sagan looks awesome!(great name BTW) Has the same look as Athos when he was young, except Sagan is probably a lot smarter :lol.

Great pic of Athos at 13!  Good looking old dude.  Our girl is 14 now, and completely grey in the face...
Oh, he's also 14 now also, he isn't grey but unfortunately has a trouble standing up and siting down. Well... like you said with Sissy, we have to enjoy them while they're with us. Great looking, BTW! Never met one. Boxers on the other hands are great, very smart dogs. My neighbour boxer used to take Athos for a walk, he grabbed him by the leash and walked him around the neighbourhood, very fun to watch. :lol

TempusVox very handsome dogs! Siberians are awesome, I'd love one but it's too hot for them here. Lucy looks great too!

Agreed!  Lucy and Dreyfuss are gorgeous dogs!  Sissy is getting the same way as far as slowing down.  We now have steps for her to get up into bed, and I think shes starting to go deaf and blind a bit.  :-\

It's looking like we're about to lose our Golden Retriever of 13 1/2 yrs Jessie.   I'll come clean right now - I cannot believe how this is hitting me.  I learned early in life to switch off emotionally and am usually unaffected by many things that your average Joe finds upsetting.  Sometimes I surprise myself - a sad item on the news might generate some tears welling up for no apparent reason but on the whole I'm generally known as an "ice man".

I'm certainly not worlds best dog owner either -  Jessie has always been an "outside dog" - mostly due to the wife's influence-  but that never worried me too much.   As we had kids and life got more challenging in my business I've learned to live with immense stress and little sleep without so much as losing my temper , but that has also meant less time for Jessie.  I can see her most of the day outside my (home) office window and I've always made sure she is well fed and healthy (not once has she been sick in 13 years) but , although she has always had a nice yard to roam in (and destroy) I've rarely managed in recent years to drive her elsewhere to play and give her the variety and socialising that she ideally needs and I guess I feel a bit guilty about that.   Perhaps that is getting to me a bit now.

I'm sitting here at 3am with my friend Jack (and Coke) with plenty of tears running down the face and, as I said,  I cannot believe how I'm reacting.  I've got through family funerals with far less emotion - but I suppose there can be a difference between the uncle you see once a year and the constant in your life every day for 13 years , even if there's only 5-10 minutes a day of quality time sometimes.  Cue Cinderella's "Don't Know What You've Got 'Til It's Gone"...........or close enough.

Sorry for the vent...........I won't be making a big deal of this with anyone else and just felt like a rant.  I am so shocked at how I'm lettting this get to me.

Perhaps it's the credit card bill I can see on the horizon  ;D    I rang the vet today , explained the situation, and they said "bring her down" and then told me "we close in 20 minutes and don't have time to run tests - we can put her down or you need to take her to a 24 hr hospital".  It was all rather cold.   So........I'm 99% sure she's going to need to leave us but I took a deep breath and signed up for the $1000+ hospital stay/tests.  Kidney failure is confirmed now and we need to see if she can urinate after a day of IV fluids.   I feel I owe her this much even though we can't afford it.  Seeing her unable to walk, very depressed and refusing food and water has been tough and I don't know how I'm going to go with the "final visit" assuming it comes to that .

Anyway........bl5150 out.  Back to the music and grog.

This.

So sorry for this Brent.  I know I'll be a blubbering mess when the time comes for either of our two dogs.  I've got no words of wisdom... just try to remember the 13 years of joy Jessie brought to your family.  I remember reading this once, and though it was very touching.

Thanks Chad and everyone - that little piece is nice too -  like I kept saying I'm shocked at how it's affecting me.    We went and saw her tonight - they've given her 24 hrs to improve significantly or it'll be deemed not worth persisting.  She perked up when I walked in but quickly deteriorated again. Still not walking or eating.  As much as anything it was a chance for my little guy (6yo) to see her - likely for the last time.  One big shame is that it's taken 6 years for him to really get attached to her - just in the last week or so (I think he detected something was wrong before I did )  and he's going to lose her literally days later.

Anyway...........trying to keep my mind occupied with other things.  Every time I start on this subject again I tear up again.  Off to watch the latest episode of Vikings with a strong beverage  :)

I wanted to post this earlier. I'll make it small in case you don't want to read it right now. I have it hanging on my fridge with a picture of our dog.

10 Things your dog would tell you.

1. My life is likely to last ten to fifteen years. Any separation from you will be painful: remember that before you get me.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me—it is crucial to my wellbeing.
4. Do not be angry at me for long, and do not lock me up as punishment.
5. You have your work, your entertainment, and your friends. I only have you.
6. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don’t understand your words, I understand your voice.
7. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget.
8. Remember before you hit me that I have sharp teeth that could easily hurt you, but I choose not to bite you because I love you.
9. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I might not be getting the right food, or I have been out too long, or my heart is getting too old and weak.
10. Take care of me when I get old. You too will grow old. Accompany me on difficult journeys. Never say: “I cannot bear to watch” or “Let it happen in my absence.” Everything is easier for me if you are there—even my death.

bl5150...... I'm feeling for you man, I really am. Had to put my guy 'Drake' down last summer and it was tough...by far the most difficult decision I've ever had to make and it left me a wreck for a solid week.  but like Chad said, hold on to the memories because they will get you through it. It does take some time but you'll reach a point where it won't hurt as bad....I promise.

Bad news comes in bunches. Lucy my sweet, sweet dog just had a tumor removed from inside her lip last week, and the results came back that it was cancer. The vet is confident that he got it all, but yesterday on her follow up he discovered another tumor in her abdomen. So she had surgery again today. He won't know until it comes back from pathology, but it doesn't look good for my terrific girl. She's only 9. I'm not ready to let her go. Much, much too soon. She's one of the sweetest dogs I've ever known, and always a ready companion. We had a coy-dog (1/2 lab, 1/2 coyote, that was Lucy's mentor when we adpoted her as a pup) who developed cancer 6 years ago and had to be put down. I learned at that time, that typically when your dog has cancer that can't be surgically removed, they say it can't be treated. This really isn't the case. Just like in humans, many cancers on dogs could be cured, but the American Vet Association feels that the "cure" most often is too tramatic and cruel for dogs to go through. To do so, really puts the dog through too much physically, for our selfish gain. As you can imagine, she's allowed as many extra treats right now that she wants. I don't want my dog to suffer; so I pray this tumor is benign. I'm not ready to let her go run over the "rainbow bridge" yet. Just not ready. Because I'm not worthy of all of the unconditional love she gives every single day. Times like this you wish you could make time stand still.
You don't HAVE a soul.You ARE a soul.You HAVE a body.

Thanks for your thoughts gmillerdrake and sorry to hear about Lucy TV.   This post is gonna kill me but this is something I think I need as I won't be talking about it to anyone , as it's just too much.  Only 5 hours ago I lost my Jessie..........essentially by my own hand (agreement) which , for me , makes it so much worse than finding her passed in her sleep.

I spoke to the vets again this morning and , after 5 days in hospital , she is still not eating , could barely stand and kidneys were at minimal function.   What makes it that much harder is that each day I saw her she was improving because she's on IV fluids, nutrition and painkillers so the dehydration was all gone and she was perking up , especially today.    Reality says though that the minute I took her home (without all the assistance) she would be in great pain , comatose or back in the hospital ........if I can believe the advice.  In the end I had to push them for some more concrete advise as they kept saying "come in and see what you think" (sitting on the fence) but on the weight of evidence , her age (14 and a half...........so about 95 in human years) etc..........and the potential suffering if I did what I wanted to do and bring her home..........logic says I did the right thing by her.  I spent a couple of grand I couldn't afford trying in vain.

Every bone in my body wanted to avoid being there to see it but I forced myself for her sake - I spent an hour with her beforehand and patted her as she faded away.  Somehow I avoided breaking down whilst there - I cannot say the same now I'm home and everyone's in bed.   Logic aside I feel like the world's biggest asshole - standing there watching her looking up at me trustingly as I gave the nod to the vet...............that will haunt me for a very long time.  Turning off life support on a brain dead pet or something I could live with quite easily but looking them in the eye as they seem quite happy in themselves ........ :'(  :'(  :'(

To make things worse I had recently been feeling guilty about the lack of time I'd spent taking her out and about (she did have a great back yard but variety is good) and had booked a dog- friendly holiday for her two weeks from now to sorta make up for that.

Tomorrow comes the job of telling my 6yo boy who only in recent weeks had really become attached to her......and the morbid discussion of what to do with "the body."

Sorry for another rant - I sincerely appreciate all the kind thoughts.

Below is a photo of my son with her last night and the other was tonight minutes before it ended.

Try not to let that image of her looking up at you haunt you. I had the exact same scenario with Drake...I was petting his head as the vet administered the shot. I look at is as the final thing he saw in this world was his Master....the person who loved him the most and who he lived the most was right there by his side until the end, looking at him and calming him and guiding him into eternity.

I battled the 'did I do the right thing' emotion as I'm sure everyone who's had to put their dog to sleep has. You always feel like you could have/should have done more. But the reality for me was Drake was 13...had failing kidneys and could not use his back legs for more than a minute or two. Your sweet dog was 14 and from your description was suffering from some severe illnesses. You did the most responsible and loving thing an owner and Master could have done.

Like I said in my earlier post....my heart and thoughts are with you because I intimately know that pain your going through...it's still fresh in my mind. But I do promise you two things...time will heal that pain and you did so the right thing.

Take care...

I'm so sorry. My heart is breaking for you...I'd really like to provide some words of comfort but I'm afraid it would only come off as self serving. Still, I think you did the right thing (for personal reasons) even though it may not feel like it right now. Maybe sometime later, when the pain isn't so fresh I'll share but right now it seems wildly inappropriate.

I'm Jessie would have much rather had it this way than potentially being alone in pain in her final moments. I feel for yah. Not much in this world jerks my emotions, but the thought of putting down your dog certainly does. The dog I have is my first one, and I'm dreading the day when it's finally time.

Thanks again all - gunna be another long night.  Time to do some work on my Top 50 to distract the mind
