Retro Video Games
« on: August 07, 2013, 09:06:03 AM »
As evidenced by my User Name, I'm a big fan of retro and classic video games. I've been playing them for a long time, since I was a little kid. Sometime during high school I really got away from it and recently have rediscovered it. There's a lot of challenge in the older titles and most of them are significantly more unique than the typical first-person shooter fare of today's consoles.

The Legend of Zelda and Mega Man are my favorite franchises. I have a complete Legend of Zelda collection (save those CD-I games, yuck) and I'm working towards finishing my Mega Man collection up - I have most of the tough ones to get!

What are some of your favorite old games, or were some of your favorites when you were younger? Post pictures of your collection if you have one!

I found they updated the PlayStation Network with a long list of PSX and PS2 games, lots of stuff I am excited about replaying either for nostalgia reasons or cause they're just too damn fun. Getting Fatal Frame 1 and 2 then Siren then probably Syphon Filter 1 & 2 and others.
Pushing back further into the 90's I'd say the two Prince of Persia games were my first really enjoyable gaming experiences cause I never really enjoyed first shooter games like Wolf 3D and Doom even though I played them both. Duke Nukem being the exception cause I really liked the second one. God I really hope I never have to play a video game on a computer again.
I wouldn't want somebody with 18 kids to mow my damn lawn, based on a longstanding bias I have against crazy fucks.

Bahahaha.  My favorite retro games were on the Commodore 64.  Fort Apocalypse, Bruce Lee, M.U.L.E., Satan's Hollow, Telengard, Lode Runner, Montezuma's Revenge, Impossible Mission, Bard's Tale 2, Phantasie, etc.  :lol

Always loved the Megaman games... I love the name/avatar Spark. My brother and I were just talking about how easy Spark Mandrill was if you had killed Chill Penguin before him  :lol

Aside from Megaman, some of my other favorites were of course the Mario games for SNES (including Mario RPG), the Breath of Fire RPG series (made by Capcom like Megaman), of course pretty much any Final Fantasy game I could get my hands on, the Monster Rancher series, etc... I could go on for a while  :lol

This, yeah. Most games named in this thread I wouldn't consider retro at all. I'll add Defender of the Crown and the Summer/Winter Games. I loved being the Russians, they just had the best anthem.

Summer Games was awesome.  For some reason, I always chose Brazil.  I think because it abbreviated itself (BRA).  :lol

Add to that numerous Infocom text adventures and others from Electronic Arts, like Mail Order Monsters and the Adventure Construction Set.

Then of course there was Artworx Strip Poker.  Good times.

Tecmo Bowl for the NES is also ridiculously fun.
And I know it's become kind of joke sort of thing, but Battletoads is such a fun game as well, it's a great game to pop in and play with a friend over night.

Don't know if this qualifies as retro, but we had an (old already at the time) Sega Master System at home, and I loved playing Alex The Kid. So amazing.

I still own my NES and Sega Genesis.  I don't have a huge collection of games for either of them, but I've got a lot of old favorites.

Currently playing Ecco the Dolphin on Genesis.

7. River city ransom

Love this game!! Nice to see that someone else appreciates this underrated classic.  :tup I hear that there is a reboot coming in '14.

Big retro gamer here. I'll blow the first person who can guess the reference under my avatar. My favorite series are the same as the OP, Legend of Zelda and Mega Man. Also love Mario, Castlevania, and Metroid. Mega Man has the best music of any video game franchise, IMO. I'd add that MM2 has the single best soundtrack in video game history.

My SNES still works, and I've also got a Wii, which I have plenty of old-school games on. List:

Mega Man 9
Mega Man 10
The Legend of Zelda
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Castlevania
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
Super Castlevania IV
Super Metroid
River City Ransom
Double Dragon
Secret of Mana
Actraiser

MM2 definitely has some great music, but for me, nothing beats Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in terms of music.

Agreed about MM2. I wish someone would do a cover of the whole soundtrack, and do it well. I suck too much to do that.

here is my list of top 10 NES games I posted somewhere here before:

1 RBI Baseball
2 Bionic Commando
3 Tecmo Bowl
4 Contra
5 Baseball Stars
6 Blaster Master
7 Double Dragon III
8 Zelda II
9 SMB II
10 Ninja Gaiden

Although, I wouldn't necessarily call them retro.  We had an Atari 2600 growing up (still have it in a box in the attic).  But what I remember playing most was our old TI-99.

Here are the games I remember most from the 99:

A-MAZE-ING
ZeroZap
Moon Mine ("You'll never get me . . . HA HA HA HA!")
Parsec
Miner 2049er
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr
Moon Patrol
Winger would be better!

. . . and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.

How about retro PC games? Space Quest was a lot of fun.

I still have my Super Nintendo and NES that I bust out from time to time. Never get tired of playing through an old Zelda game.

Don't want the blow.... but that quote was from some random person in Zelda II.

Don't worry, it was a joke (I hope that was obvious). And actually, the guys name is Error. This is evidenced by the fact that there is a man in the town of Mido that tells you "Ask Error of Ruto about the palace".

If we're talking old school sports games, NHL '94 was the shit.

I am old enough to think that anything post-8 Bit console era is not retro.

I still feel bad I never beat Metroid. I never had it as a kid. I've finished all the others. I also never had any MegaMan games growing up.

Was a big fan of FMV PC games, and am pumped there is a new Tex Murphy game coming.
