Everything Punk
« on: July 28, 2009, 03:46:58 PM »
Well, this is the latest genre I have been into. Everything from folk punk (Mischief Brew, Defiance Ohio) to older punk (Dead Kennedys, Adolescence) to just standard punk (Bad Religion, NOFX). If anyone knows any great punk bands that I have might not have heard of, then please tell! I haven't gotten enough of this genre. I find that the nice short album length keeps me going back more and more.

My favorite punk is really pretty old:

The Buzzcocks
Gang Of Four
The Fall

I'm a big fan of political punk. Love bands such as Anti-Flag, Rise Against, Bad Religion, Against Me!... all I can think off of the top of my head at work.

Celtic Punk (Dropkick Murphys)

And I only listen to a few punk bands, so The Dead Kennedys, NOFX, Dropkick Murphys, and the Descendents are my favorites. But I picked up a few Me First and the Gimme Gimme's albums, and they're pretty awesome. I've never heard a punk cover before, so I was really surprised

I highly recommend Rx Bandits.  Their older stuff is more straightforward punk, but their past few albums include more ska and progressive rock influence.  Start with their album The Resignation.

I'm pretty big on pop punk myself, like the Ataris and blink-182.  But like chknptpie said, go for Rise Against.  For Siren Song of the Counterculture alone, it's worth it to check them out.

Mr. Neccy, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent post were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this board is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Siren is my definite top album for Rise Against, after that is Revolutions Per Minute... but I love all of their albums, seen them at least 7 times and even got to meet them a couple times. I would have Tim's babies.... I'll stop now.

This.

Although I also really enjoy the Offspring, Green Day and NOFX, even if the first two are on the more poppy side of punk.

I also have an album by Social Distortion that I really like but have never got round to checking out anything else by them.

I was going to add The Clash to my list of political punk, but its not like that was their major focus. As for the Sex Pistols, I was never that big of a fan of theirs, same with The Ramones.

As promised, here's a name drop. Nothing huge.

Assorted Jelly Beans
Buck-O-Nine
Dance Hall Crashers
Inspecter 7
Mad Caddies
Mephiskapheles
Link 80

Most of those are ska/punk. You decide if you like them.

Fuuckk! I was gonna start a Punk thread, seeing as its pretty much my fav. genre. Serves me right for being lazy.

Anyways, what type of punk are you looking for? If you are wanting to get into Punk you absolutely absolutely absolutely have to get your hands on "Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols". I tend to agree with Fat Mike from NOFX when he says that there is no other album that has that much intensity, anger, rawness, just...Fuck! You have to listen to it, freaking legendary.

You also definately have to check out The Clash. London Calling, and pretty much The Singles are an absolute must. IMHO, in order to appreciate the music you gotta check out its beginnings.

Then move onto the hardcore punk stuff from the 80s. I see some good bands, Black Flag, DK, Circle Jerks, Bad Religion, Adolescents, but you HAVE to check out Bad Brains. You will get into a rage listening to them, its overwhelming. And definitely Subhumans, amazing tunes, amazing lyrics.

Social Distortion are one helluva band that you must check out as well.

Then yeah, Rancid are always good, Anti-Flag, Pennywise, The Briggs, etc. Your on the right track.

And for Ska, Op Ivy, Less Than Jake, and some NOFX.

Mssge me if you want some more bands, I know tons. And if you really wanna get into it, watch some documentaries or read some books. Me being absolutely obsessed and part of the punk scene, have learnt a lot from Punks Not Dead, American Hardcore, and books like My So-Called Punk.

I'm happy/surprised there are so many people here that listen to actual punk!

Yeah, I saw that one.  Very interesting, that one.  Where can I find a doc about the development of modern punk (i.e. the last decade)?

Just the last decade?

It's not only about the newer stuff, but check out Punks Not Dead. It starts with the usual early stuff, then gets into 90s and stays there. It's really interesting, I've seen it about 10 times now. :) Also if your still interested, I know there's a documentary coming out caled One Nine Nine Four. Thats pretty much all about 90s punk rock and pop punk and such.
