The System of a Down thread.
« on: July 26, 2013, 09:32:20 PM »
Such an amazing band. Their raw power in their early days is comparable to Metallica's, I'd say.

They were the first metal band I got into back in 2001, I think. I bought both the self-titled and Toxicity and played the hell of 'em in an ugly stereo. Good times! I just got through their whole discography once again, and there's not a dull moment. Steal this Album! is still my least favorite of them, but it has some amazing songs nonetheless. Any thoughts?

Go. I herby declare this thread opened.  :millahhhh

System Of A Down is awesome. I've never been sure how they managed to become so popular, with their characteristically bizarre style. I guess that's what I love about them, though. Their ability to make completely unorthodox songs extremely catchy. Also, I know some fans don't really like the way Daron started doing more vocals, but I've always thought his and Serj's voices played off each other very well.

So, those are my thoughts. :D

I also was in the "Why is Daron doing lead vocals now?" club because I had the Toxicity/Self-titled sound so stuck in my head that it just sounded weird. I wanted him to stick doing backup vocals only like in Sugar. But after digesting Mesmerize, I got to the conclusion that their voices really played well one to each other.

Random SOAD thought of the day: Deer Dance makes me want to destroy stuff.

System of a down is a pretty great band, but it can sometimes get hard to take them seriously with all the silly lyrics and things they put in. Still love them though. Serj's voice just fits the music perfectly and most of their stuff is rock solid.  :metal

I don't think their lyrics are that silly. There are bands that have put out super-cheesy lyrics out as well *cough Dream Theater cough cough Symphony X cough cough *. Though, I agree with the point that they can get so political it can get dull at times.

Also, Serj's recordings in the first albums rank pretty high in my "metal vocal performances" list. (No, I don't have such a list, but we would be up there if I had one)

I don't think their lyrics themselves are silly, but sometimes (I mostly notice it on the earlier albums) it feels like they aren't phrased very well. I don't know exactly how to put it into words, but it feels like sometimes they didn't really take the lyrics into account when they wrote the melodies. Like, the lyrics and melodies are fine separately, but they don't quite fit together.

Or something. I'm tired and I can't quite figure out what I'm trying to say. Alas.    :P

SOAD is one of those bands where their songs get stuck in your head and you actually like it.

Except for Chop Suey, which is one of my least favorite songs from Toxicity. Sucks that it's their biggest song...  :\

Yeah, I can see where you're getting. Either way, they were never meant to be taken as a serious band. I mean, Daron used to do super crazy shit on stage and play with half-ass out.  :lol

Watch Daron. He's nuts.

I love how in all their performances the drummer always manages to keep his cool, while the other 3 guys are wreaking havoc  :lol

I once heard someone say that SOAD's drummer and Kristen Stewart should date since they have the same personality. :lol

I've listened to Mezmerize and Toxicity, both are awesome, but the former is a bit better.
I haven't checked out the other three, though I listened to a bit of Hypnotize and it didn't really grab me...

To be fair, that performance was in the peak of their insanity. Nowadays, he puts a pretty good show (performance-wise).

Hypnotize is the best album ever Soldier Side the best song System the best band

Now that we've gotten that out the way, I was just talking with my dad about the live concert we went to today. I still remain the opinion that it was the best concert that I have ever been to.

Yeah, on their... 2011 tour, I think it was? In Berlin. Amazing concert, even though though they a) didn't do an encore and b) my watch was stolen.

Totally worth it.
