I'm back for another report lol. Well this album has officially clicked with me and I can't stop listening to it. It's so difficult to determine my favorite song since there are so many I love. Top contenders though are Strange Deja Vu, Home, The Dance of Eternity, and Finally Free. I bought the Scenes from New York dvd and will watch it soon. Still too early to rank it since I need to let it age but I can see it in my top 4 now.

I'd also recommend I&W instead of Scenes - you need to hear Metropolis Pt. 1 before Part 2
Yeah, because when you hear the Metropolis pt.1 riff in Home, you're gonna be blown away :neverusethis:

Yeah, because when you realize the lyrics to Pull Me Under are about Hamlet, you're gonna be blown away :neverusethis:

You'll be blown away after finding out the lyrics of Metropolis Pt. 1 are about the story of Romulus and Remus. :neverusethis:

I'm another one who would love to listen to SFAM for the very first time. LSFNY is defintely the album I listen to the most, I also need to buy a new DVD 'cuz my old one is seriously damaged on the bonus tracks that are really a highlights for me. LTL and ACOS played in that way are just mindblowing.

Hope you continue to listen to it and enjoy it. It's in the top tier of DT music. It's not a perfect album (Through Her Eyes is pretty bad, for example), but it's has some of the best DT moments they've ever put out. Operation Mindcrime is still a better concept album, but SFAM is excellent.

How could you skip anything on SFAM :omg:

It's quite easy to skip a song that is not good.

I thought we were discussing SFAM here. There is no such thing as a song on that album that is not good.

What? Through Her Eyes borders on cringe worthy. I love Scenes but that song is the only dud.

I think it's amazing :dunno:

I agree....  THE is really beautiful.

The only part of the entire SFAM album that I find even mildly boring is the first half of Home.    The rest is just amazing.   SFAM is just an amazing piece all the way around.

So is this a good "first" DT album to buy?
Not sure what you mean.  I wouldn't by any stretch of the imagination recommend this as a first album for a new listener.

Really?  This was my first album.  The first song I ever heard from Dream Theater was the live version of Home.

Funny story about how I came to like Dream Theater.  My friend gave me the Live Scenes CDs after I heard some of Home in his car.  I was like woah you're telling me that is a keyboard and not a guitar??  I was like wow these are really cool sounds and these songs make absolutely no sense to me!

So I took the CDs home and I started listening to disc 1 of LSFNY.  I listened to that disc a whole bunch of times.  I liked it a lot, but it confused the shit out of me because there were no choruses really in the songs.  And the songs were wild with instrumental sections that I couldn't wrap my brain around.

Soon disc 1 started to become familiar to me, but I never went on to disc 2.   I did not realize that the album continued onto the second disc.  One day my friend told me, dude you need to listen to the rest of the album!!!  So I did.  And all the reprises blew me the fuck away.  When all the melodies from the overture came back, chills everywhere and it was easily cemented as the most amazing piece of music I have ever heard.

Having delayed the last part of the album, made it that much more prolific when I finally got around to listening to it.  My god.

This. It's been a year since I last heard SFAM in full, but I do listen to my favorites like FT, Home, FF, THE and OLT on their own every now and then. However, I don't like BTL, TDOE and TSCO too much, so I might skip them if I listened to the album now.

I kinda forgot about this thread lol, nice to see it's still a bit active. I love the album, it's fantastic. I've also watched the Live dvd and that was great as well. I'm pretty sure I ranked the album in another thread but I'll post it here too as well as my song rankings (I love every track):

1. Home
2. Strange Deja-Vu
3. Overture 1928
4. The Dance of Eternity
5. Finally Free
6. Beyond this Life
7. One Last Time
8. Fatal Tragedy
9. The Spirit Carries On
10. Through Her Eyes
11. Regression
12. Through my Words

Albums:
1. Awake
2. Images and Words
3. Scenes from a Memory
4. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
5. Octavarium
6. Train of Thought
7. Falling Into Infinity
8. A Dramatic Turn of Events
9. When Dream and Day Unite
10. Systematic Chaos
11. Black Clouds and Silver Linings

aprilethereal

I'm going to try this as well since I love doing rankings, but pretty much every song on SFAM is close to 10/10 (well maybe not Regression), so this is just how I feel at the moment, it changes all the time:

1. Finally Free
2. Through My Words/Fatal Tragedy
3. Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu
4. The Spirit Carries On
5. Home
6. Through Her Eyes
7. Beyond This Life
8. The Dance Of Eternity
9. One Last Time
10. Regression

?

I didn't include Regression and TMW, because it's hard to rank them as individual pieces:

Fatal Tragedy
Home
Finally Free
Through Her Eyes
One Last Time
Overture 1928
Strange Deja Vu

The Spirit Carries On

The Dance of Eternity

Beyond This Life
