Ummm...no mention of either Nightwish or Epica.  Are they excluded for a reason that I missed?

Nightwish - Any of the 3 Vocalists, but especially Floor Jansen
Epica - Simone Simons
ReVamp - Floor Jansen
After Forever -Floor Jansen

JOANNA NEWSOM

Her album Ys is beyond amazing and stands as probably my favourite album of all time.  Especially if you have a soft spot for lyricism; she's unmatched.  Honestly, if you can stick this album out, you're in for a real treat, its so densely layered, poetic and beautiful.  The orchestration from Van Dyke Parks is mind blowing.  I cannot stress the amazingness of this album enough.

A couple of my favourites:

Kimbra - Vows.  Incredibly diverse Proggy Pop stuff.  Try and get the 'original' version of the album, the NZ/Aus release, rather than the US, its much better.

Neko Case - Middle Cyclone.  Sorta Rock/Country/Alt Pop.

Kaki King - Dreaming of Revenge.  Awesome guitarist/vocalist.

Eisley - Room Noises.  Dreamy bubbleguppie pop, amazing harmonies.

Battle of Mice - A Day of Nights.  Awesomely disturbing Post/Doom Metal, with Lloyd Christmas' sister Julie on vocals.

B52's - Cosmic Thing.  Classic Pop, the female harmonies on this album are second to none, incredibly tight if you consider that these were the days before pro-tools and pitch correction.  'Topaz' is a gem (lol)

All of these have probably been mentioned already lol but gahdam acquire the fire of these here albums.  I listen to loads more female artists but you probably have enough suggestions by now and won't even end up listening to half the stuff you've been recommended lol.

Warpaint (maybe the best all-female band currently active)
[...]
Hiromi

I came on here to say Warpaint as well, and I have to admit I agree with Hiromi as well, she's amazing.
This is as exciting as superluminal neutrinos. The sexy thing is that this actually exists :D

Your answer confuses me.

Is it "Yes! I love the sound of dying cats, and it saddens me that she doesn't sound that way on her new album" or "Yes! She sounds so awful, but rest assured she doesn't sound that way on her new album"?

<3 I think the cat thing is something you tolerate until you can appreciate the beauty of the music as a cohesive whole.  It definitely would not be the same were she a 'trained' non-screecher.

I don't know. I learned to tolerate Iced Earth's first singer just because he sounds hilarious, but what I've heard of Newsom puts me off instantly. She sounds gross.

Zook, I can't get past her vocals, but for this one song (and this performance of it in particular is what sold me to it).

Dunno if this is confirmed, but I read it's about her processing the decision to get / coming to terms with getting an abortion.

"and though it may be madness, I will take to the grave your precious little long face".

I havent seen the video but from that lyric I can tell what it is, possibly my favourite song ever, can bring me to tears if I'm in the right mood.

"And though my wisdom, my waist, seems so easy to break, still my dear I'd have walked you to the edge of the water.  And I will recognise all the lines of your face and the face of the daughter, of the daughter, of my daughter." Ahhhhhhh <3

Ok, weird voice aside, that song was devoid of any melody whatsoever. I skipped around, and it was basically the same thing throughout. Don't get the appeal at all.

That's probably the issue.  Its certainly not 'devoid' of melody, but now that you mention it I can kinda see where you're coming from.  I think in the tradition of all good folk music, its really just a beautiful story, executed wonderfully.  To each his own.

Yeah, maybe not the best name ever, but what the hell, their music is awesome. You should check David Maxim Micic's albums (he's the main guitarist/arranger), they're as good if not better than the potato stuff.

Amy Lee of Evanescence released a new album today. I just started listened to it, so I don't have an opinion yet, but it's a soundtrack to a movie. Some tracks are like a minute and a half, and there are guest vocals. Kinda interesting so far.

Ok, this is a very short album. If you like melancholic piano violin soundtrack pieces and some elecronica, you might like this, but there isn't a whole lot to it. Amy Lee barely sings. It is nice on the ears though.
