The Netflix Recommendation Thread
« on: July 13, 2013, 12:06:06 AM »
So i searched the forum for netflix and couldn't quite find a 'recommendation' thread. i apologize if i missed the real one if it exists

So those of you with instant streaming, what are you guys watching and liking?

I recommend:

BBC Sherlock: very popular, but i just got around to seeing it and i fell in love with the show. a modern approach to the classic character with Cumberbatch and Freeman

BBC Copper: Show about Irish detectives in NYC during the civil war. just finish season 1 and i really enjoyed it

I'll second Sherlock. Also, Continuum.

And Scrubs, my all-time favorite show.

I'm watching Sherlock just now!   :omg:

Completely loving it.  Fantastic chemistry with Watson - I understand they're great friends in real life.  Go see!  "Coupling" has just turned up in streaming,  too.  Same crack writer.  And producer, Moffat's wife, Sue Vertue.

Also "Luther".  GRIPPING crime drama.  "House of Cards" with Kevin Spacey...aces!   :tup

My queue is massive.  But goodies await.

Peep Show!

Either you love it, or it's too awkward and makes you uncomfortable.

Came to post Sherlock. I watched all six episodes in one day.

By the time you get to Reichenbach Falls - you're completely engrossed.

Lost, Scrubs, 30 Rock, both versions of The Office.  Mad Men.  How I met Your Mother, 24, Lie to Me.

British - MI5, The Inbetweeners (so hysterically/horribly remniscent of boyhood adolescence, you laugh til you cry from the pain inside).   :P  Then, there's the movie/finale...

Can I say Coupling again?    ;D

I Saw the Devil--brutal South Korean movie about a cop trying to catch a serial killer.
Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door--loosely based on a true story about a girl who is tortured by her caretaker aunt.  Low budget, but the cinematography, set design, and performances are fantastic. For a movie about such horrific stuff, it is quite beautiful to watch.

Yeah, I know... :sadpanda:

I've been reading that there is talk at HBO about making HBO go available to the public for a monthly fee rather than just current HBO subscribers (who get access for 'free'). I think they started rethinking their business model when the premiere of the latest season of GOT had something like 3.3 million torrent downloads in the first week.

I'll just do my one disc at a time method.   :-\

I never watched Sopranos when it was out (no HBO) but I'd like to see it now.

Do it! The preferable method would be to buy the the entire series'  boxset on dvd and do a marathon. It really is one of the greatest shows ever. The only one I enjoyed more was the other incredibly ambitious HBO drama, The Wire.

HBO really should provide HBO go to non subscribers for a monthly fee. I've been signing in to it using my friend's account, and have gotten a lot more use out of it than I did with Netflix. It really is the best television has to offer... The Wire, The Sopranos, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, Game of Thrones, Curb Your Enthusiasm...

You don't realize how much stuff HBO does in house until you use HBO Go. Years worth of entertainment.

Yah, well...I don't generally do box sets.  Too much money for something I wouldn't watch enough.  It was a big deal for me to get The Matrix box!  Since I can't determine in advance that I'd like the entire series, I definitely won't be putting down that investment.   :P

I'll have to do the snail mail.

I understand... that's the way I did watched it the first time too.

It's only now that I've decided to buy the box set since I can see myself watching it a couple more times.

Do what we did for Seinfeld. Buy it used on Amazon for cheap (10-15 bucks a season) and re sell them as soon as your done. We got through 8/9 seasons of Seinfeld that way. In the end after reselling we only paid a few bucks a season.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Please please please COUPLING!!!

I've never seen an episode that didn't leave me crying with laughter on the floor...except maybe a couple in the first season that are more "setup" episodes.   But there is not a bad episode in the bunch.

Not even Fawlty Towers makes me laugh as hard as I do with Coupling.

*Watching more Sherlock*...

As a fan of soundtracks, may I just say I really like the intro theme to this series?  And the way it's filmed makes London look gorgeous and sexy.

Freaks And Geeks.
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

I'll second Sherlock. Also, Continuum.

My sister in laws new boyfriend activated one of his Netflix accounts on our TV. I Watched the first two Seasons of Sherlock and will be watching the third one now that it's starting in America on Sunday. Love the show, it's great. Such a well written....well acted program.

And....just flipping through Netflix tonight I see Continuum. And if I didn't just sit and watch the first three episodes.....I really didn't need to get hooked on another show but SOB.....I am. It's right up my alley and I'm digging it.

I Saw the Devil--brutal South Korean movie about a cop trying to catch a serial killer.

Have to 2nd this.  As good as revenge movies get.   And while we're recommending brutal South Korean movies, Old Boy is great as well.

Til the day I die...I will never stop pimping BBC's Coupling.

It is on Netflix, and there's almost not a single episode that I don't have to stop and catch my breath from laughing so hard.

If you haven't watched it yet....PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE watch this show.   Funniest show in the history of television IMHO.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That's right. Still an amazing show after all these years. No Nostalgia goggles here.

BUT, it may be wise to stop after the fifth season. If you end up loving the show, you will be extremely disappointed with the last 2 seasons.

The Swedish film The Sound of Noise. About a group of avant-garde musicians who commit musical acts of 'terrorism', and the detective trying to stop them. It's awesome.
