7. “The Whirlwind” by Transatlantic (2009)Favorite Tracks – Is it Really Happenning?, A Man Can Feel, Lay Down Your Life
Least Favorite Tracks – Rose Colored Glasses, Dancing With Eternal Glory/Whirlwind (Reprise)
Coming in at #7 is Transatlantic’s long awaited third album. I, like many, thought that Bridge Across Forever would be the last album that this super group would ever produce. Fortunately I was wrong, because as good as BaF is, this album blows it away (forgive the choice of words). The Whirlwind is much heavier than its predecessor, and it sounds great. Though it is separated into tracks, The Whirlwind is considered one song. And it is one epic prog metal journey. Some of the lyrics are a bit silly, but who cares? This is Transatlantic at it’s very best!
6. “Consign to Oblivion” by Epica (2005)Favorite Tracks – Consign to Oblivion (A New Age Dawns Part III), Mother of Light (A New Day Dawns Part II), The Last Crusade (A New Age Dawns Part I)
Least Favorite Tracks – Trois Vierges, Another Me “In Lack’ech”
Just missing out on a spot in the top five the album that I consider to be Epica’s masterpiece, Consign to Oblivion. I discovered Epica in early 2005 when my brother gave me their first album. I bought Consign a few months later and it blew me away. This is symphonic metal at its best. If you can get past the growls and the lack of guitar solos, than you might just love everything else about this album. Simone sounds great, as always. The songs flow very well. And the epic at the end is one of my favorite songs. I had the pleasure of seeing Epica perform many of these songs live. And after the drummer killed it on the title track, I caught the stick that he threw into the crowd. But even if you don’t have a personal memory like that, this is still a fantastic album, and one that Epica may never match.
