I don't think anyone else had a deeper appreciation for the mailman on that particular day than me:

Just finished reading the book. The book, for me, unfolded a lot like DT's career. It was off to a very gradual start, but then I just couldn't stop. Great read, even if a lot of it was information that I'd already collected in bits and pieces over time, getting so many other perspectives on it as well as learning new things, this is one of those things that reminds me just how much I love and cherish this band and their music.

I have the original version and the second hard cover version, yet both have somehow gone virtually unread.  Regardless, everyone's enthusiasm with this version prompted me to get it just now...I figure if I got around to reading the other versions, once I got to the end I'd want the new chapter anyway, so what's another $20 or so?   :yarr

Over half way done with the book, does anyone else read quotes from the band members in their voices?

Yup, for sure. Which makes it that much more difficult when I'm reading quotes from people I don't know.

I hate it when I start reading a quote in some voice that I know totally doesn't fit the personality of what's being said, yet I have that voice stuck in my head so I can't stop reading with it. I don't know if that made any sense, but that's what happens to me sometimes  :lol

I usually manage to change the voice. As soon as MP started talking about what a jerk David Prater was, I just kept hearing him with the most arrogantly annoying tone ever. He even comes off like that in his interviews... Or is that because of the voice in my head?

I have an exam on Tuesday, so I haven't been able to read the book a lot, but I've managed to get through the first 100 pages and it's been very insightful. When MP said "I came through that class with flying colours" in the first chapter, I was thinking "nuggetz!" :D

I'm done reading the book, and I loved it! A few things that caught my eye:

- David Prater comes across as a complete fucktard. Wow.
- MP was more involved in the songwriting than I thought
- Everytime a new release comes up in the book, Rich Wilson comments something like: "certainly among the best DT have ever done"
- I hadn't noticed Live at the Marquee also had triggered snare drums

Funny, because MP was LESS involved in the songwriting than I thought.

Yeah, I noticed that too.  :lol
But hey, aside from BCSL, I kind of agree with a lot of it.

And this was my first post on the forum, just found it. I have been a fan of DT since Awake.

- David Prater comes across as a complete fucktard. Wow.

I was quite fascinated by his character to say the least.  :lol Anyway, I couldn't resist to dig after him a little bit and found what appears to be his YouTube page (https://www.youtube.com/user/elrondingo/feed?activity_view=7). Surprisingly, it's as if he still hasn't let go of the past, mentioning DT twice in his short activity feed:

Quote
My name is David Prater. I produced Dream Theater's "Images and Words" and "Change of Seasons" This is what they have sorely lacked since those fateful endeavors:

Imagination and Vision

Well done lads. This is a one up on Porcupine Tree I'm afraid.. They are also my current favorite group. Or now ...maybe not...

In another video, someone suggests that he turned out to be an asshole while producing I&W, which he categorically refutes, "No, not at all".
The guy is hysterical and we have a 9 page thread dedicated to him here. Should be a fun read. :corn  (EDIT - It was trippier than expected, with Prater turning up, defending himself while pretending to be a third party.  :lolpalm:)

So I finally decided on the voice I'm using when I read David Prater's lines.   If anyone remembers the movie Beverly Hill's Cop with Eddie Murphy, this should be familiar.  It's the scene where the captain has the two cops assigned to watch Axel Foley. One of the cops says, "I'm not going to fall for the banana in the tailpipe" and Axel mocks the way he says it. THAT guy's voice is David Prater.

Just finished reading the book! It's a great book and gives lots of insight into a DT's music and past... Now I'm really looking forward to get the DT12 tab book and seeing the band again live in February.
