The only thing that bothers me about this cover is that there is no shadow of the balls on the ground.

I don't think the cover "ruins" the album or anything, but there are some people who'll catch things like that, and it will bother them always.  When I first saw the cover, I thought something looked a bit off, but couldn't figure out what it was.  Less than a day later, the angle of the fourth ball had been analyzed and found to be wrong, and the entire analysis was posted here.  I really was glad that I didn't have to do the work myself, because now I know what's "wrong" about it.  And it was also heartening to know that I wasn't the only one bothered by it.

This is published work.  Someone signed their name to it, took credit for it.  It is amazing that it could be so sloppy, when just a little more effort would have avoided all of it.

Even more amazing is that someone (or a group of people) looked it over/proofed it and ultimately approved it.

Several person FAIL.

More old Octavarium album cover news:  If you look at the entire jacket laid out straight, you'll notice that it's a keyboard:

*snip

The balls are the white keys, the birds are the black keys.  The ball on each end is "F".

Ha! Thanks for pointing that one out. This is the first time I noticed this.

Which now that I think about it is all the more interesting.  The balls start and end with what is represented to be the F key.

What's the very first note in Root of All Evil?

F on the piano.

It's the entire album.  "The Root of All Evil" is in F, "The Answer Lies Within" is in G, etc.

I'd also like to point out that if the thing you're unhappy about with the balls not being rotated is the shiny-bit, that would't be changed, due to how far away the sun is.

They had already lifted the shadows off of it... :neverusethis:

Nope.  It's am American slang that took out the n't about a decade after the phrase came into use.  It is grammatically incorrect but it is used in the states and still means the same.  I could give a flying leap about these silly little things that people with all the time in the world want to debate ad nauseum like it means anything to everybody who is on the internet and real life.

Run-on if you are wondering.

In fairness, it's not a grammatical thing so much as a semantic thing. It's that the words don't mean that thing when they put them in that order.

That said, if it's good enough for this Webster, it's good enough for this Webster. I'm not personally going to start using it any time soon, but human language has been morphing for two billion years now, no use getting precious about a particular incarnation.

But hey! He did pretty bad covers for Rush, too! At least he DT covers don't have asses on them :P

Wow, I've never noticed that the geometry of the first and last balls are off. Now I can't un-see that.. damnit  :lol thanks a lot guys lol

Ugh same. I actually really like this album cover, but now it's going to bother me.

And now it's really obvious how they did it. You don't even need math. You could do it correctly pretty easily. Instead of making the ball and string first, then rotating it about the correct point off canvas, they just copied the ball on the far left, moved it up a bit diagonally. They didn't even rotate the ball. Then they just rotated the string a bit and bit wherever it ended up. Stuck a diagonal Majesty symbol and there and mirrored it on the back. Laaaaaaaazy. At least he matched the angle of the symbol and the string.  :\

(sometimes it's just fun to complain about dumb things.)

The best part is when you look on the back cover, it shows the band members faces on different keys of a piano, and James... is on F#.
