Liquid Hand Soap Dilemma
« on: June 13, 2013, 02:20:06 PM »
Okay, I'm old and learned to wash my hands with bar soap.  To do that, you had to wet your hands first, then pick up the bar of soap, rub it around a bit to work up some lather, then rinse off and dry.  Yay.

Now you young whippersnappers have this fancy-ass liquid soap.  So what's this I see?  People squirt it into their dry hands, rub it around, then rinse off.

:omg: You mean you can skip the "wet your hands first" part?  What in the hell?  That never occurred to me, because, as I said, I'm old and rubbing a bar of soap around in dry hands doesn't work.  You don't get lather, you just get this gross residue on your hands.

But it never occurred to me to modify the technique to suit the new medium!

So I tried it. :tdwn Eeeewwwwwww!!  That's just not right.  I'm sorry, but squirting goo into my hands and rubbing it around just doesn't feel right.  I mean, there's a time for squirting goo into your hands, and... no, wait.  There's never a time for squirting goo into your hands.  What kind of weird shit are you kids into these days?

I can't figure out how to make a poll, but I'm interested in how others do it.  My informal survey, which involved observing how others do it in a public washroom, was cancelled because it involved observing others in a public washroom, which is all kinds of taboo.

They're doing it wrong.  Always wet first even with liquid soap.

There was a segment on Fox News with Shep Smith yesterday regarding how many actually do it wrong in general.  Some just don't at all.  Some only use water.  Some only just wash for a few seconds.  The right way is at least 20 seconds or more.  There was no mention of wetting hands first.  That's pretty much a given since most of us know that water helps to spread and activate the soap.   :justjen

Even worse is when you go to a club or somewhere with one of those ‘washroom attendants’ who offer to squirt the soap in your hands for you. I mean, I have been hammered 7 ways to Sunday in several clubs, and have never required, nor wished, to have another guy squirt soap in to my hands in the bathroom. And they always give me more than I need, like I am scrubbing in for surgery. I know it is just to entice me to drop a buck or two in your little basket, but I would be just as happy, if not more so, if you limited your services to offering me a paper towel when I am done.

The first ingredient listed on the box of hand-washing goo is...wait for it...WATER!! It comes pre-waterafied for your ultimate convenience. Rub goo vigorously for 20 seconds or more, rinse goo off along with released soils, dry off, go have a smoke. Easy-peasy!

I just don't piss on my hands.  It helps that I'm hung like a Shetland pony, so I have to stand a couple feet away from the urinal.  No splash-back.

In all other cases, it's Hath said... water first; goo second.

No surprise that they didn't mention wetting the hands first. It is FOX News after all, and they can't even get the news right.

Two different things. The old-school way was cleaning your hands. You use soap and you rub them for 30 seconds. I seem to recall that the soap isn't even important; it's the rubbing action that matters.

The new-fangled way is just to kill critters. It'll keep you from getting nasty shit, but you've still got dirty hands.

Ha ha, so "antibacterial soap" helps prevent spreading infections, but doesn't actually clean your hands?  That's awesome.  Only in America.

No.  Hand sanitizer does that.  Anti-bacterial soap is just soap with an anti-bacterial agent added.  So, it does both.

As to the OP, definitely add water first.  It's not actually the soap that cleans your hands, it's the water.  The soap just makes the water more effective.

Finally, the liquid soap dispensers, at least on the bottles you buy for home use, dispense more soap than you actually need (presumably so you have to buy it more often).  I generally just go for a half-pump on the home dispenser.

Soap needs water or your hands will be left gooey. Hand sanitiser doesn't, cos it evaporates. It's absolutely fine on a dry hand! It's great. Much easier, way more convenient. Sort of cold, but basically pleasant.

Is this what we're discussing?

It seems to have wandered off in that direction, yes.  El Barto brought up the hand sanitizer trend, which has replaced handwashing in some people's minds, even though it has a very different purpose (disinfecting versus cleaning).

But mostly, it's a silly thread about something I tried and found unpleasant, and I'm surprised at how much response it's gotten.

Don't even get me started on people who walk right out of the restroom without washing their hands.

Three men were standing side-by-side using the urinal.

The first man finished, zipped up and started washing and literally scrubbing his hands ... clear up to his elbows ... He used about 20 paper towels before he finished. He turned to the other two men and commented: "I graduated from Harvard and they taught us to be clean."

The second man finished, zipped up and quickly wet the tips of his fingers, grabbed one paper towel and commented: "I graduated from the University of California and they taught us to be environmentally conscious."

The third man zipped up and as he was walking out the door he had a smirk on his face and said: "I don't know about you guys, but where I went to college, they taught us not to piss on our hands."

Just because he didn't piss on it doesn't mean it's clean.

I'm not saying this for the sake of argument... No. His dick is probably cleaner than 95% of the surfaces I touch throughout the day.
