It's been like 4 months since I began listening to Dream Theater religiously. The reason I asked though is because I can't run (bad knees) so I'm relying more on weights to tone my muscles, and I need metal or really heavy stuff to pump me up.

Well, then The Mirror, Lie, Home, The Dance Of Eternity, The Glass Prison (bleh), TOT, TROAE, The Dark Eternal Night, Lost Not Forgotten and the heaviest of them all: the acoustic cover of a Rush song: Tears.

Try Oh Holy Night too! It's such a metal song and James even hits a full G5 one the second to last line back in 1992. (Youtube to believe)

Are there mp3s for these available? How does one get these?

Well, I suppose the mp3s exist somewhere, but the only legal mean to acquire them is through the 1999 International Fan Club CD release Cleaning Out The Closet. If you have a spare 100$ (or at times 70$) you will be able to buy it on ebay.

ETA: no MP3 for Oh Holy Night (which is not metal at all, I was just goofing around :D), it's a live recording.

He was being sarcastic. Tears and O Holy Night are slow, acoustic songs. I'd be more likely to fall asleep than work out to them.  :|

In my defense I can say that James did actually hit a full high G in Oh Holy Night :D

Well it's not Dream Theater but Black Label Society's S.D.M.F is a great workout song :hat
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Actually, I think Overture 1928 is a great workout song. It's got an upbeat tempo and it's very major, so it fills you with inspiration and positivity. Or at least fills me with that stuff.

James LaBrie's past 3 albums are great for working out, too.

These are all terrible suggestions for a workout. The discarded B songs from FII aren't even great songs, let alone great workout songs. :lol

Eye of the Tiger is one 4 minute song. You can either listen to it and have it only last you 4 minutes, or listen to it on loop, and get a half-hour's worth of exercise out of it before it gets old. Might as well fill the rest of your time with DT rockers.

For the workouty thing, try this (don't worry, it's from the official channel of the people who play it): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZpEjrdf56k

It does have a lovely calm bit in the middle, but most of it's really quite driving, percussive and completely mad rhythmically.

A more detailed answer: to Tampere. We're on the way there with a van full of my stuff. My apartment is on the fifth floor, so it will be challenging to get my bed, desk and everything else there and I bet I'll be pretty tired after the experience...

Thanks! We got all the stuff into my room and my parents went back home. I have a room mate so I'm not completely alone, but of course this is different from living with your family. I'm happy with my room, but I have to admit it makes me sad I couldn't take my CD collection with me :( Well, I'll buy some records (obviously including the new DT album) later :metal

I imagine Ville has the problem I had in Uni. Too many CDs to bring with me if I'm likely to move each year.

That's cool Ville! Too bad you couldn't bring your CDs. I've lived on my own for 2 years now, and my CD collection is at my place. It's not that big though, only about 120 CDs, but that's cause I've only been really listening to music for about 6 years. Before that, I only listened once in a while to some songs on the radio that I thought were good.

Yesterday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhWSzY7erPA#t=106 (after the rain stopped)

And I was out there in the heaviest rain I've ever seen driving at 20km/h without being able to see the other cars (only lights) or the edges of the street. I was indeed quite frightened, and moreso because my parents' plane was about to land in that mess. :(
