Classic Rock Vocal Showdown #16: Halford vs Meine
« on: May 30, 2013, 07:43:17 AM »
Half way through, and we'll do the other pairing of legendary metal voices.  If Ozzy/Dio was a landslide, I suspect this will be too.  Priest certainly gets a lot more love around here than the Scorpions.  Personally, I've never really cared for Halford's voice, although I will admit I probably haven't given it a fair enough shake.  Meine's style and range is more along the lines of what hits the sweet spot for me.

I suspect there's every possibility mine could be the only vote for Meine.

Going on hiatus after this one for a while, as I'll be on vacation until the 10th or so.  Next round though, will be the biggest showdown of the opening batch of pairings.

Gotta go with Halford. His range alone would do it for me but the character he puts into his performances is nearly Freddie-like.

Klaus has had some classic moments through his career but they seem few and far between to me.

Halford by far. Especially back in the 1970's.  :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

NOBODY tops Dio as the ultimate metal singer.

I'm going with Meine. Halford's vocals are too pitchy and almost comical at times when he's singing in the upper register. I don't consider Meine one of the better rock singers, but he's got a good voice, and I like his tone.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Here comes another landslide.

Halford. The man DEFINED a generation of metal singers. Meine isn't bad, but I actually prefer his singing on softer numbers like Lady Starlight to his rockier numbers.

Klaus Meine is great, but I can't really justify voting against Rob Halford.

Exactly. Unfortunately a lot people aren't familiar with the 70s material when he was at his peak. The 3rd verse of Dreamer Deceiver is insane just for one obvious example, not to mention all those other amazing screams from that record. I also really like Meine by the way, but this isn't a fair fight.

Yeah, his performance on Dreamer Deceiver is completely insane. I had to vote for him, based alone on that.

Though I don't even like the Scorpions (strange, I know :P), so this wasn't really hard either way.

Absolutely.  His voice has gotten shaky at times in recent years (but what the hell, he has to be pushing 60!), but back in the 70s and 80s, he was unbelievable.  Like Scorpion said, Dreamer Deceiver is just ridiculous.  It's almost unfair. :lol

I would absolutely concur, relatively speaking.  Halford may have declined in his range in recent years, but his range was far wider than ANYONE.  Halford still is better than most.  Meine is closer to how he was in the 70s and 80s... ie, he hasn't declined as much, but he didn't have nearly as much range to lose.

This is actually closer than I expected.

Klaus.  Halford has never done anything for me, mostly because Priest has never been on my radar (haven't cared for anything I've heard from them), but even then, I don't really like his voice.

Regardless of how much was actually touched up, Halfords vocal performance on Unleashed in the East is nearly unmatched by anyone.

Going with Halford. This is actually an easy choice.

Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D

Never saw him in person.  I judged his vocal abilities from the bands albums, his stage presence from concert footage, and his BJ ability from your Dad's memoirs.

I was actually listening to Dreamer Deceiver earlier today (it had been awhile since I last listened to it), and I gotta state the obvious and say that what everyone else has said about that song already is spot on. Utterly and positively insane vocals.

I think that Klaus is usually a very under rated vocalist. It seems that most people dismiss him and the scorps all too often. That's a sad thing because they could easily be mentioned as some of the founding fathers of the metal movement. Also, considering the fact that Klaus had to have surgery in the early 80's on his throat for pollups(spelling???) it's pretty amazing that he did as well as he did for so many years. In fact, I heard a story once that Don Dokken actually had to stand in for Klaus on the blackout demo's while Klaus was recovering.

However, there is a very short list of singers that could ever compete with RH and Klaus isn't one of them.
All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again
