Classic Rock Vocal Showdown #13: Gabriel vs Lake
« on: May 25, 2013, 05:05:31 AM »
Alright then, another couple of contenders in the heavyweight category.  Either could be considered the founding voice of progressive rock.  Many argue whether it's King Crimson, or Genesis that is the grand-daddy of all prog bands.  Personally, I'll give the nod to Genesis.  I like Lake's post KC work better than KC itself.  Both vocalists have a very distinct and unique sound and delivery, and have often been imitated, but never duplicated (as much as I love Fish and Marillion, how many people have thought "Is this Genesis" when hearing Fish-era Marillion for the first time?)

Gabriel it is for me.

I just love PG's rasp in his voice.  Genesis or solo.

Greg Lake is amazing...

... But Peter Gabriel just has that hint of absolute madness which is the crowning glory of Genesis, and such precise delivery, without which so many Genesis songs would not quite be the same.
This is as exciting as superluminal neutrinos. The sexy thing is that this actually exists :D

Gabriel, and to make an appropriate reference to how I expect the voting to go...here comes the flood.  :lol

:lol  I'm honestly surprised at how one-sided a lot of these are turning out to be.  I guess when you put 64 vocalists in various matchups (like a March Madness tourney), few of the first round matchups are all that close.  Well, maybe round two will have some more interesting matchups.

Then again, we're not even 1/2 way through so maybe there's more difficult decisions ahead.

TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

Either could be considered the founding voice of progressive rock.

*cough* Justin Hayward *cough*

Anyway, I love both of these guys as singers, but I have to give the slight edge to Gabriel, thanks to longevity and quantity of quality.

Gabriel. I like Lake's voice but he's never been a favorite of mine.

Eh, maybe.  Stay tuned kimosabe.  His matchup is against another of the prog founding fathers.

I hate Gabriel's Genesis voice, but much admire his solo work voice (for as much as I don't like the material). Did something change? Did he just sing differently when he went solo?
