Battle of the 5-album runs Vol. 6: Genesis vs Yes
« on: May 24, 2013, 01:53:22 PM »
This is extremely tough, as these are two of the best ones, not only of the 70s, but ever!

For me, you ask me this question 100 times and I'd say Genesis 50 times and Yes 50 times, but today, right now, without over thinking it, I'll say Genesis. Just don't ask me again in five minutes. :lol

I think I would have started the genesis run one album earlier. I won't answer the poll since I haven't listened to Yes.

Genesis. But it would make more sense if there was Trespass and Nursery Cryme instead of the two post Gabriel albums.

Gotta go with Genesis, but it's pretty close. If it wasn't for Topographic Oceans I'd like Yes' album run just as much.

going with Genesis, solely for the fact I don't have Relayer.

Genesis, but a small margin.

Had the Yes run gone from Fragile-GFTO, it might have stood a chance, but that five-album run for Genesis is just too good. I do miss Nursery Cryme, but W&W is one of my all-time favorites.

I'd dare say you could pit Genesis' first 10 albums and Yes's first 10 (both of which go right up to 1980 with two D-name albums, Duke and Drama), and THAT would be quite the battle!!!

Genesis. Closer than you'd think, but if I ever did a prog top 50, all those Genesis albums would be in the top half of my list, I love them that much.

That 5 album run by Yes is simply amazing. As much as I enjoy Genesis, out of those 5 albums I only really enjoy 2 and Lamb is not one of them

Foxtrot is better than any of those Yes albums, but the Yes run is better overall (despite containing TFTO).

Insanely hard decision. After much thought, going with Yes, but any other day I could've gone with Genesis.

Yes, five fantastic albums and one really damn good one.

Would have gone with Genesis if The Lamb didn't ruin the streak...

you have the wrong 5-album run for Genesis.

Give me Trespass-The Lamb

aka the Peter Gabriel-Genesis

and it defeats the run Yes had. But by including the 1st 2 Phil-as-lead-vocalist/last-2-Hackett albums, it taints the streak to me for Genesis. Although it's almost a push given I find both Close to the Edge and Tales to have issues. Tales only being that The Ancient just doesn't work with the other 3 pieces, and CTTE is frankly, just rather overrated and Wakeman's organ sound becomes nauseating over time with that record.

Same here. The Phil albums there are not bad, but they need more Hackett.

Well, They both have Hackett while Trespass doesn't :)

Incorrect. ;)  I could see starting with Nursery Cryme and doing the run through A Trick of the Tail, but Trespass?  Nah.

Trespass is awesome. It also has the closer which was their defacto closer for ages. It also contains Stagnation, which, I am pretty sure, still featured in the extended soloing at the end of I Know What I Like in 2007. It may not have Hackett or Collins, but it's pretty definitively "Classic Genesis".

agreed. Stagnation alone is better than anything on Trick. White Mountain, The Knife, Looking For Someone, Visions of Angels.

Trespass I find is better than The Lamb as well (mainly given The Lamb includes some filler, I don't find anything on Trespass worth skipping).
