MATCH #1 - TAC vs. Lolzeez
TAC - Prymary / Edge Of Discovery
As soon as the song starts I understand straight away it's gonna be an oblique sounding one, not an upbeat tune, nor a gloomy and not an oppressive dark cloud like some songs that will follow. Just oblique, out of the picture. One very weird feature are the very low vocals in the fist part of the song (they get somewhat louder as the song progresses, it must be an intentional feature, but I didn't really get the purpose of it). I must say that the song failed to grab me especially where it should have, like in the powerful albeit a bit forgettable (to me) chorus. I listened to this song more than 5 times, and yet I cannot recall a single detail of it, which is never sign of a great chemistry between the piece and the listener. However, the instrumental break is rather good sounding, especially with the keyboard playing in the foreground with the bass building in the shadows. A short quieter transition phase (around 10, 20 seconds) separates the keyboard solo from a better guitar solo before the eventual reprise. So, a fine song that has its moments but ultimately failed to reach out for me in these occasions I gave it. It's not impossible that I will check the band in the future to see if I'm luckier with another song.
Score: 6.9/10
Lolzeez - Intronaut / Killing Birds With Stones
Well, the song marks an improvement over the last one you sent, at least with regard of the structure and the much more bearable lenght (especially when it comes to roulette handling). It starts off as really dark and gloomy and... surprise! the vocals kicking in remind me more of what I would expect from a bunch of friends to sing while going on a road trip to the countryside than what I vaguely expect a post metal band would sing. Do I expect this contrast to last throughout the full song? No. Does it? No. A second, darker vocal line starts less than a minute later taking down the somewhat eerie happy mood that had been partially established. An interesting feature is the vocal dialogue between two well different voices (could be the same singer, though), one clean, rough and distorted the other. The instrumental section sounds fine but without incredible heights, despite being there a very clean guitar driven interesting instrumental part near the beginning of the seventh minute, with clean vocals taking the foreground around 30 seconds later. The song ending, however, feels very rushed fadeout and could have been, IMHO, handled a lot better without necessarily compromising the sudden-death effect.
