Something important to ponder
« on: May 12, 2013, 02:00:02 PM »
If you are friends with me on facebook or twitter I've already put it there, but I think this is worth everyone's time.  The full version is worth listening to as well.  It is a commencement speech by David Foster Wallace.

Mesmerizing speech. The big thing I got out of it was to be actively conscious of the great world we live in even in our most mundane, boring situations.

Reminds me of a quote from Louie:

Quote
'I’m bored’ is a useless thing to say. I mean, you live in a great, big, vast world that you’ve seen none percent of. Even the inside of your own mind is endless, it goes on forever, inwardly, do you understand? The fact that you’re alive is amazing, so you don’t get to say ‘I’m bored.'
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges

Foster Wallace is amazing. Infinite Jest is a masterpiece. I was really sad when I heard about his death.

Wonderful. The full speech without the graphics is even better. It draws you in more.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

Very true, but people are more willing to give you 9.5 minutes of time than they are to give 22.75 minutes, thus I went with the short version.
