Classic Rock Vocal Showdown #7: Tyler vs Jagger
« on: May 12, 2013, 05:40:21 AM »
Neither could be considered spectacular in their own right, but there's no denying the impact the Stones had on 60s/70s rock, and the same could almost be said for Aerosmith of the 70s.  As frontmen, both are the best of the best.  Both have a lot of miles under the hood, thanks to copious amounts of drugs and alcohol, but have stood the test of time (literally).  The Stones may have not released anything relevant in 30 years, but what they did do in their prime was legendary.  Aerosmith had that lull in the early 80s, but came back as a major force in '87.

For me, I'll take Tyler.  He's able to deliver more range, and more emotion.

I hate both, but at least Tyler can sing well. Mick Jagger couldn't hold a tune even back at his peak (if he ever had one). Awful vocalist. Maybe if we were comparing dance moves you'd have a contest.

I predict a landslide.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Funny... how the Stones are clearly a 'bigger' band, but vocally the preference overwhelmingly goes to Tyler.  Same could be said an earlier showdown - Ozzy vs Dio.  What is it that as a whole, The Stones are bigger/better, but individually the nod goes to Tyler (and I would dare say many of the other instruments)?  Rhetorical question.

The Stones had less competition when they were building their fan base and got that early customer loyalty much easier.  And same as the case with Ozzy where people consider him the band, many older people consider the Stones rock and roll.

Though I like songs from the Stones, I do not like Mick's style of singing.

Yeah, Tyler. For me, Tyler post reunion. Never rated his vocals on the early albums but PV, Pump, GAG, all excellent. He sings a great ballad too.

Jagger is shit. His band is shit. How they got so legendary being so shit is amazing.

Jagger is the vocal equivalent of Phil Rudd. The right man for the right job. I wouldn't put Jagger in front of the mic in any other band. But anyone else singing 'Sympathy for the Devil' or 'Paint It Black' just doesn't sound right.

Never liked Tyler or Aerosmith.

While Jagger isn't great, I don't think he deserves some of the bashing he's getting here. Still went with Tyler though. Funny story about Tyler; he and his son actually walked literally right by my family when we were on vacation in Anguilla. Of course I didn't realize who he was until someone in my family said it since I was only 10 or so, but it was still pretty cool  :lol One of the few random celebrity sightings I've had in my life.

This sums up Mick Jagger perfectly. No one else sings those songs like he does, but he would be worthless in any other band. Of course, I'm kind of amused at a lot of this, since Tyler and Perry did their level best for a LONG time to be Jagger and Richards.  :rollin

Yeah, Tyler's a better singer, but c'mon, it's the fucking Rolling Stones. There wouldn't BE an Aerosmith without the Stones.

Hey!  I had a couple of close ones.

Seems this one isn't so much Tyler being awesome as much as it is dislike for Jagger. If I had Tyler against some of the other 'losing' vocalists (Henley, Ozzy, DeYoung, Lennon), would it be so lopsided??  Doubt it.

Probably shoulda out Jagger against Nugent.

I've actually been coming to appreciate Jagger more and more. He's such a perfect fit for the Stones, and he can still perform with the best of them. Sounds great on "Doom and Gloom," the new single I've been hearing on the radio, too.

Chris summed Jagger up pretty well. I really love pre-87 Aerosmith, but I suspect that plenty of other singers could have done just as well for them. Jagger's attitude was a huge part of the Stones, and I don't see them being the same band with a different singer. I suppose it's akin to an NFL MVP. It's not about who's the best player, but who's the most important person for their team.

That's an insult to the great Phil Rudd! Sure he only knows one drum beat, but he plays that one beat damn well! I've never heard Jagger sing even a basic melody competently, and he's not even singing the equivalent of Phil Rudd's 4/4 drum beat. :lol
