Good lord, I knew he had health problems but never knew it was that bad.  Man, loved this guy when I was discovering thrash metal and Reign in Blood is still one of teh greatest metal albums of all time.

I'm really knocked over by this.

I had a feeling there was more going on with his health than the problems he had with that spider bite a few years ago, but I didn't expect this at all. Wow.

Well, I'm really kicking myself. I had 2 chances to see Slayer, and I passed it up saying "oh I'll catch them some other time", ultimately just taking each member for granite granted. What a fool I was,

Now we have lost Jeff and I will never be able to see a master perform his craft, and I regret it deeply. RIP Jeff.  :'(

Fucking spider bites.

That really sucks. I was just reading up on that whole deal the other day. Like Jac said, it seemed like there was more going on than what they were saying.

If I get a few minutes I'll see if I can scare up the pictures I took from the Reign in Blood tour. Hard as fuck to take pictures during that thing, but I did get a few.

This really sucks. He was a great guitarist and the one show I saw with him was one of the best. I think I'll play some Slayer tonight. I haven't in a very long time.

I haven't listened to Slayer in years...but at one time, they were one of my favorite bands.

I saw Slayer open the Reign in Blood tour on Halloween 1986 in Seattle.   Fantastic show.   Jeff was always my favorite member of the band.   I'm very saddened by the loss of life at such a young age.

RIP Jeff

Jeff Hanneman is attributed to writing songs such as Angel of Death, which not only was the first Slayer song I had ever heard but also from the first full Slayer album I had heard back in the 7th grade. This man's musical input changed my life in so many ways, and seeing him with the rest of the guys on stage two times feels like a fucking privileged now.

R.I.P. Jeff. I wish I had my car right now so I could make my entire town listen to your evil riffs and chaotic solos.

OMG we did that in Houston driving around Westheimer and Montrose back in 1987.  GOOD times.

Damn.  That was very much unexpected.  I had seen Slayer 6 times over the years, beginning with the Seasons in the Abyss tour.  The last time I caught them was in 2009 with Marilyn Manson, and the band still had a great energy that cannot be duplicated live.

RIP.

I guess the spider bite has been cited as a possible cause, but it seems the more likely cause was alcohol abuse. From what i read in other articles he was drinking heavily every day. Still, very sad.

I don't think its as simple as he wrecked his liver with alcohol. He's a bit too young for that. What's possible is that lots of drinking combined with massive antibiotics wrecked it. Perhaps more likely is a steady diet of beer and pain relievers. I understand that acetaminophen is the leading cause of acute liver failure, and accidental overdoses related to alcohol tend to be particularly dangerous.

Then there's the possibility that he was a junky. Lots of people get his condition from dirty needles, and it's certainly a good way to trash your liver. However, my guess is that he wasn't suffering long term liver failure. This sounds like more of a sudden thing.

I can definitely see other factors having played into it, such as medication relating to the spider bite. I was basing my comment on an article that quoted a friend of his saying that Hanneman was on a steady liquid diet of Heineken and vodka. If you do that long enough, 49 isn't really that young to die of cirrhosis.

But I don't think people just suddenly up and croak from cirrhosis. In his case, they would have known he was having liver problems when he was hospitalized. If he let it get him from that point, he must have just really not given a damn. Like I say, I'm guessing this was more of an acute thing.
