Top 3 Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson albums?
« on: May 02, 2013, 10:08:50 AM »
In the threads for both PT and Steven's solo stuff we've often been ranking the albums, picking favorites, etc., but I'd like to see how the solo albums would do in a poll that includes the PT discography.

For me FOABP, TSMS and In Absentia are the best releases Steven has ever been part of; Stupid Dream comes close though. TBH his solo records haven't impressed me as much as my 5 favorite PT albums (the ones I mentioned plus Up the Downstair), although I am really pleased with The Raven and Insurgentes has some awesome standout tracks. Those PT albums are just something special and the solo releases don't have the same magic IMO, although I know everyone won't agree with me.

E: My full ranking:

Fear
Sky
Absentia
Dream
Downstair
Raven
Signify
Insurgentes
Deadwing
LBS
Grace
Incident
(still haven't heard OTSOL)

ranking them all would look something like this:

Raven
Lightbulb Sun

Incident

Signify

haven't heard enough of the others to distinguish between them

I almost never do rankings anymore because my musical obsessions change hour to hour. But whatevs, I'm feeling it (and the one constant is Signify):
1. Signify
2. TSMS
3. TRTRTS

Deadwing and Lightbulb Sun are undoubtedly 1a and 1b for me here.  As for the third, it is probably either Stupid Dream or The Raven, but the latter is still too new for me to fairly judge it.

Man it's crazy to see how many people already include Raven as one of their favorite SW albums.

Anyways:

Fear of Blank Planet
Deadwing
In Absentia

1. Stupid Dream
2. Insurgentes
3. Fear of a Blank Planet
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. It tells a lot about the extent of my fandom for PTree and Steven when I can't decide do I really really like any of these albums other than Stupid Dream and In Absentia. I tend to like them all but none of the rest are especially special.

:lol

My choices are Deadwing, Lightbulb sun and, I'll dare to say this already, The Raven that refused to sing.

1. Lightbulb Sun
2. Deadwing
3. Stupid Dream

In Absentia a close fourth. Raven is the only SW solo album I'd rank higher than any of the 1999-2009 era PT albums.
