The Ocean Band Topic V.Sinking Down The Abyss
« on: May 02, 2013, 09:32:08 AM »
How on Earth there's no topic for them here yet is mind boggling. A fantastic Progressive/Sludge/Post Metal band from the great country Germany, they're a band that turn Scientific subjects, ideas, and terms into fantastic concept albums, full of beautiful moments, swaying from a soft chilling beauty to an aggresive burst of intensity!
They've just released their (In My Opinion) best album yet "Pelagial" and the concept behind the album is the 7 different layers of the ocean, and the album progresses from light to dark, in the form of heaviness, lyrical content, and emotion. It's quite a journey, and I urge everyone to check it out ASAP.
Their other work is also very much worth your time, each album having it's own distinct sound, it's own journey.

So yeah, any other fans here?   :yarr

I've enjoyed what I've heard of Anthropocentric and Heliocentric, and I've been meaning to get Pelagial. Sounds quite interesting.

How are the vocals on the album? I know Robin wasn't planning to have any initially.

A mixture of his clean vocals, which soar quite a bit early on, and his trademark bellowing. It eventually tends to lean more to his bellowing, but he sings quite a bit as well, and for those interested (I was!) Pelagial comes with an instrumental version of the album, and it lends a different light to the album and is quite fun to explore, both versions are just fantastic!

The new album is pretty good. I'm not a huge fan or anything though, enjoyable music. It's probably top30 in 2013 so far for me.

They didn't have it at Best Buy. Guess I'll try amazon? That vinyl looks nice, though it's expensive.

Pelagial is pretty good. A couple of songs stood out more than the rest, but the album feels very much like one continuous piece rather than individual songs almost. Very definitely a grower of an album.

About ten listens in, and I've gotta say, this is probably my album of the year. It's a very beautiful album that really feels like an experience.

Why can't I find this album in stores (even ones which carry other The Ocean albums)?

I love Precambrian, and I've seen them live opening for Devin Townsend once. I need to check out Pelagial and the rest of their discography, since Precambrian is so good.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?
LOOK AT THIS AWESOME SHIT AHHHHHH

Thanks! Just listening, Precambrian is completely amazing. I love the atmosphere and the vocals are some of the best harsh vocals that I've heard in sludge metal. These guys + Mastodon = :hefdaddy :hat

Didn't realise they had a new album out, will try and check it out.

I'm sure theres at least one of their albums that I really love, but I always forget which one it is  :blush And then some other stuff that I'm not so keen on, so I don't listen to them that often. New album sounds like it might be interesting though  :D

So I was originally planning to dig into their discog a little more, but after the The Ocean/Mastodon concert was cancelled, I lost the motivation, so I'm just listening to Pelagial now for the first time and it's completely amazing, even better than Precambrian - which was already amazing. To think that I missed these guys...  :censored :censored :censored

Just finished the album. It's freaking incredible. Very strong contender for Album Of The Year. Anyone who likes progressive metal and can stand harsh vocals needs to hear this.

Actually, even if you don't like harsh vocals, the album comes with instrumental versions of all the tracks. So you have no excuse. Get it, you won't regret it.

Also, I think Luic Rossetti is now one of my favorite vocalists. Totally amazing.

Found an awesome video of The Ocean playing Pelagial in it's entirety.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqYO6KWtvRw

Slight correction on that, they don't play all of it. I had only listened part of the way through when I posted it. :lol Still awesome, though.

So, The Ocean have a DVD set out.

https://www.amazon.com/Collective-Oblivion-Ocean/dp/B00CFYASWY/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1389496643&sr=1-1&keywords=the+ocean+collective

It apparently includes a lengthy documentary on The Ocean, plus hours of live footage. I may actually have to get this, even though I'm usually not one for DVDs. :lol

Double post, but whatever. :p

Anyway, Metal Blade has put up a segment from the DVD set. It's about 30 minutes on The Ocean's tour in China. It's really interesting, lots of cool stuff in there.
