Yup. A bunch of interesting information. I'm listing them:

  • Album is well under way. The writing phase itself is over and right now there's the lyrics writing phase going on. Vocals will be tracked soon.
  • The number of songs is pretty definite, but he is reluctant to give iformation about it because anything could still change (name, number, lenght) at this point. I guess he's keeping in mind the example of Beneath The Surface. Information will be eventually given, but he feels now it is still to soon
  • The interaction with Mike Mangini has been great, after 15 months of touring to know each other. The chemistry is great and he has to take back what is said in 2011 (that the ADTOE studio Mike was "Mike Unleashed")
  • Fans are going to definitely notice the change in the drumming with respect to Mike's drumming on ADTOE. He stressed the point, multiple times.
  • They obviously have a very clear and definite idea of what album it's going to be like, but he doesn't want to say anything about it, or to make any comparison to any of their previous release to avoid fans listening to it with a prejudice. He said he likes to listen to an album with minimal information of what it's going to be like, in order to be able to judge from the music only, without pre-conceived opinions.
  • He doesn't have a release date for the DVD, but he said it will be announced very soon - a matter of a couple of weeks, he said.
  • The DVD took a bit more than many, including the band itself, anticipated, but that's due to the amount of stuff in there. He enumerated: the size of the audio, the amount of music present in the recording, the video, the blu ray, the 360° technology, the packaging. He said that in the end we will all understand why it took so long and will likely judge it worth the wait. He stated that he honestly thinks it's their best to date, and that much will be completely different than anything we have seen in the past from them including (I think) the modalities of release.
  • As for the tour plans, they decided to take the summer off, after 5 months ad a half in the studio. He said he will enjoy barbecues. It's likely that the album will be released by the end of summer / beginning of fall, and that the touring will start in late 2013 or early 2014.

Excellent synopsis, wasteland. Regarding your last point, I believe JP indicated they would get their world tour into full swing this time next year but as far as having some dates this fall he said they are still discussing it. Correct?

Zydar

Sixtease

He also said the album should be released in late summer / early fall if everything goes as planned.

Kotowboy

Also :

* A Month and A Half to finish the album.

KevShmev

I like that, that they are taking the summer off.  In the past, it almost seems like they would have had summer dates booked already and then felt rushed to finish the album so they had time to get into rehearsals for the touring, but I love that they are taking their time with the album and making sure it is as good as possible.  If that means that they aren't keeping their "regular schedule," so be it. :tup :tup

Kotowboy

I think ADToE came out really quick considering they lost a member , auditioned drummers, hired Mike and wrote a new album and released it all within their normal schedule.

This time they had all that time primarily to write and record.

Madman Shepherd

I love DT Norway interviews so I can't wait to listen to it.

Thanks for the synopsis in the meantime.

Indeed!  If it makes for a better/more cohesive DT album, I'm on board. :)
(DISCLAIMER:  Not that I had any problems with ADTOE, which I don't.)

You did a good job trying to extract him those information. Those are I think the questions we were all looking forward to hear.  :tup

Good for them that they are taking the summer off, but I must admit that surprises me.  The summer festival season in Europe has been one of their mainstays.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Maybe thats why they're so good.  You don't just ask the same boring questions that the "professional" journalists ask in every single interview.

If you interview James LaBrie, please ask him some more in depth questions about his lyrics

wasteland

Yes, can we expect interviews with other members in the near future? :)

Kotowboy

What do we think would be the five most redundant questions someone could ask one of DT ?

1.Was ADTOE about Portnoy leaving ?
2.What does 'Dream Theater' mean ?
3.Will you ever do Metropolis part 3 ?
4.Why does Pull Me Under get cut off sudde
5.Does John Myung ever speak?

I actually did that on the Six Degrees tour. In particular "Disappear". It was printed in one of our fanzines. Dont know if I have the actual recording anymore...

I hope so ;)

Super Dude

If the album comes out end of summer/beginning of fall, I expect we should be getting that big ole press release in a month or two, right?

Loved the interview! Very well done. I really appreciate JP's willingness to discuss the new album without giving spoilers. Its great to finally get some information about what's going on with the DVD/Blu-ray. Can't wait to see it.

I couldn't help but notice (or imagine), when other members give answers in the Twitter Q&A, that JP always looks at them in a sort of a "good, you're not saying something you shouldn't yet say" kind of way :D

8. Did you ever read the Octavarium forum back in the DT.net days? If so, didn't you feel an urge to puke and never come back?

cyberdrummer

Honestly I'd be surprised if DT didn't at least do a few dates before the end of this year, even if it's just a handful of special 'album launch' shows in select cities (NYC, LA, London, Paris, Tokyo).

I don't see DT heading on a one-off tour like the one you suggested. By the way, doing one or two show per continent would be a financial disaster. It would never compensate the costs of shipping themselves, their instruments and the crew across the world.

cyberdrummer

I think DT are in a position where they could do that. They'd be guaranteed to fill large venues if they were special shows.

However, don't get me wrong, I don't think they will do such a tour. It's more a hope really. But I do think they'll do some touring before Christmas.

I'd be fine with a Boston, NYC, Philly, NJ mini warmup tour.
Yes, I'd be very happy with that!
