Listening to the live versions of "The Castaway" and "Black Winter Day" helped me remember how good that album is. The better production helped as well, although many death metal aficionados probably view the original's rawer sound as being a positive rather than a negative.

Bump. My Amorphis album ranking:

Skyforger
Silent Waters
Tuonela
Elegy
Tales from the Thousand Lakes
Eclipse
Am Universum
The Karelian Isthmus
Far from the Sun

BTW, samples of the forthcoming compilation are available: https://www.deutschrock.de/p6-i0727361257811/amorphis/magic-and-mayhem-tales-from-the-early-years/index.html
Sounds great! Finally those songs are getting better production!

7. Far From the Sun
8. Tales From the Thousand Lakes
:omg: I've never really liked FFTS. The band sounds so bored and uninspired and the songs themselves are quite bland.

Indeed, those bottom 3 I find not very exciting. TFtTL I might have liked somewhat more if it had better production, but it's still largely forgettable death metal IMO.

Maybe Tales... is a bit overrated (some people consider it their best album) and its production sucks but it's a classic full of great songs IMO. The Karelian Isthmus, on the other hand, is a bit generic death metal album but I still prefer it to FFTS.

Yeah Tales and FFTS are pretty close in my rankings, both are ok and good for an occasional listen. Karelian Isthmus I can't see myself ever listening to again though.

Watching the DVD now, absolutely loving it. The sound is great and it looks amazing!

Currently I'm on Alone and it's the song that so far is the most improved from the studio version. As can be seen from my album ranking, I really like Am Universum, but hearing this just makes me think what an incredible album it could have been with better production and Joutsen on vocals!

EDIT: Oh and also...

Just received my CD/DVD set.
Amorphis have the best cover art team in music, no doubt.
Absolutely this! The Eclipse-like images on the front on the individual CD and DVD cases looks absolutely gorgous!

I bought the "Magic & Mayhem - Tales from the Early Years" compilation on Friday. All I can say:  :metal
Especially the songs off the debut and TFTTL have been rearranged very well, now there are more keyboards. The Elegy songs haven't been changed very much, My Kantele is a mixture of the "electric" and acoustic version (like the one on DVD), On Rich & Poor is a bit slower than the original version and the part before solo in Against Widows is growled instead of the rough but melodic vocals Pasi sang in the original (like on the DVD, too). I think that especially the remake of Vulgar Necrolatry is excellent! Black Winter Day got more power that the original lacked. Tomi Koivusaari even does some growls on Vulgar Necrolatry and Drowned Maid. It's nice to hear his voice again!

The first 3 are absolutely essential (sorry, no big fan of Silent Wanters). Throw in Tuonela if you want some variety and you have a very strong introduction to the marvel Amorphis is.

I can´t wait to buy the CD/DVD but not living in the US anymore limits my ability to acquire new music.

WOW! This new version of My Kantele is so good. The guitars capture the originals perfectly, the new keyboard tracks blend the new and old styles just right, and I love how Joutsen somehow captures the essence of the old vocals while still finding room to do what he does well. All told, pretty extraordinary.

And I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how they got the sitar outro in there from the acoustic version. Still gives me massive chills every time I hear it.

I agree with all of this! The new version of My Kantele is the best one! It would be even better if the first verse was sung with clean vocals IMO.

From Amorphis' official website:

Quote
Dear Fans,

a little update on what’s happening in camp Amorphis. The album recordings are advancing straight and smoothly (whatever that means…). We are now working on the vocals and again we have Marco Hietala producing Tomi. This time everything else has been done at Sonic Pump Studios except for the vocals, which are currently in the works at Marco’s home studio in Kuopio.

We are emerging with roughly 15 new songs and on the album there’s most likely going to be 10-11 tracks. It’s again a great feeling to start realizing that the songs and ideas which have been in our heads are finally going to see the light of day.

Pekka Kainulainen has worked really hard on the lyrics. The album is going to tell the story of the most important character of Finnish mythology and folklore. He is Finnish god Väinämöinen, who was described to be an extremely powerful, wise old man who had a magical voice. Some believe that Väinämöinen was the creator of the world, an ancient hero and a very influential shaman.

Having a subject as strong as this, it was pretty obvious that making music for the album was going to be a challenge. There are lots of musical elements that have been heard on previous albums, but there is also much more. Needless to say, we are keen to hand all the material over to Mikko Karmila, who is going to start the mixing at the end of this month.

Travis Smith is currently working on the album cover and the coming artwork so far looks no less than amazing.

Stay tuned folks!!
