A little disappointed in this one actually. It's good. Quite solid, but nothing has stood out about it so far. It feels a bit too safe.

What kind of stuff do they play?
Just one type of music: awesome.

To answer your question, their music is really heavy, most sources say they´re a band rooted in death metal with folk/progressive influences. They use growls around 50% of the time these days. But they combine that heaviness with incredible melodies that you cannot get out of your head, and their clean vocals are excellent (and the growling parts too). If you want to give them a chance, here´s a short list of my favorite songs:
Born from Fire
The Smoke
Brother Moon (my favorites from my favorite album Eclipse)
On Rich and Poor (from Elegy)
Silent Waters
Her Alone (absolutely beautiful ballad)
The Castaway (the melody-heaviness combo is very clear here. They have created lots of those kind of unusual riffs that I love. Check out Against Windows for another example)
In the Beginning (the groovy part at the middle and the organ-driven part at the end fit very well)

I listened to them for the first time this week. I listened to Skyforger and I loved it. I'm a few clicks away from ordering it on vinyl.

Amorphis is a great band! I've seen them live once. I'm looking forward to the Tales from the Early Years compilation next month!

These days my favorite Amorphis is Tuonela. The melodies on that thing are ridiculous.

This has been my find of the year.  I have the most recent 5 albums, and will be getting the remaining back catalog soon.

Big props to TOX and Nick for suggesting them.

By complete coincidence, I listened to Elegy again this morning.  Awesome album.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Definitely, and I really love Am Universum as well. But if he likes Skyforger then the other two most recent albums are a must-have because they are the same stylistically but both are even better.

I'd say Eclipse is a great starting point, especially for their newer sound. That or Silent Waters, both are amazing.

It's perfect! The live shows are great and the documentary is interesting. The setlists could've been more varied, though.

I agree. I would like to add that the singer (can't remember his name) is very awesome on this dvd. His growls are some of the best I've heard live. He even comes close to.. dare I say it.. Akerfeldt. It almost makes me wonder if they were overdubbed. Although I can't imagine a band like Amorphis overdubbing an entire show.

I'm very sure they aren't overdubbed! I saw them live last November and Tomi Joutsen sang all the songs perfectly! That's also why the forthcoming "Tales from the Early Years" compilation is a must-buy for me. It'll be great to hear all those classics re-recorded with him! He's my favorite growler after Åkerfeldt definitely!

Sounds very interesting! Not that I'm a big fan of anything pre-Elegy, but it'll be interesting to see what they do with the songs.

I just finished listening to the CDs.

I thought they finished "My Kantele", then BAM!!!

They went into the "Acoustic Reprise" outro and I smileed everywhere. Truly one of the best metal bands of the past three decades.
