So UTRC is officially my favorite Amorphis album both musically and lyrically. Phenomenal stuff!

These guys, together with Arch Enemy, will be the opener to Nightwish. A bit odd that these two are the opener for NW to my ears, but I am not complaining since both bands have a good reputation and the ticket price was cheap. Familiar with AE, but have never really listened to Amorphis. But they have a new album? I will check it out then. Just listened Sacrifice and I liked it.

You can't go wrong with any of their last few albums.  Check this new one and Skyforger.

Yeah, Skyforger is awesome and I'm not even a big fan of Amorphis and growls in general. If the new album is that good, I'll probably pick it up too.

Thanks, will give Skyforger a spin soon then, sounds good  ;D

I've not yet heard the new album in full, but apart from that Eclipse is my favorite Joutsen-era album, closely followed by Skyforger or Circle.
Must've been Kwyji sending all the wrong songs.   ;D

Was so inspired by the new album I decided to write down my thoughts in a short, simple review yesterday evening. Feel free to read if interested.

Really good review and comments mate.
They seemed to have taken a step up to the next level with this album.
I think working with Jens Bogren is the secret here, he really has pushed them hard and got the best out of them.

This album is getting some spins between the Book of Souls and is magical.  Dark Path has opened up to be a classic Amorphis tune, excellent.

It really has that something special feel about it.
As for the new Maiden, well this is so good I can't even bother with more than a couple of songs that didn't sound that interesting.

Great review, sir. Also fun to see someone mention at the bottom that he isn't a huge Amorphis fan, but he couldn't stop listening to the new album.

At this point, I feel like the record is in the running for their best, behind maybe only Elegy. I love it to death.

*She ;) But anyway, thanks! :) Amorphis shared the review on their official FB page, which makes me a happy camper. ;D

Btw, has anyone else listened to Amorphis' version of Everytime I Die by Children of Bodom yet? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qafQngvbBIQ It's not that different from the original, but they've made it sound like their own.

Yeah been spinning this and it's a pretty good Amorphis album. Nothing mindblowing but very solid with a lot of good tracks. Still not huge on Sacrifice though. Prob a 7/10,I prefer it to Circle though and it's most likely their best since Skyforger.

Been waiting to hear the Bodom cover, many thanks.
Sounds like Amorphis, not that different from the original, but I reckon it's a killer version.

I recently put Under The Red Cloud in my car again and have it now in heavy rotation.

This is now officially and definitely my favorite Amorphis record.  :metal

Cool thing for a band that's been around for so long to release such a strong record.

Amorphis is playing a special show in Helsinki in August that will consist of an improvised set with a few guest musicians and a second set that includes UTRC in full. Man, I can't miss out on this! :metal

Yeah, that was sad news - she was so young. :( I wonder who they'll get to sing it with them.

On a happier note, Elegy is 20 years old today!

The first extensive North American tour since 2008 is imminent, apparently from early March til mid-April. No official announcement yet, but individual venue information is probably popping up already.

Aaand here's a report of that show! We also got to do an interview with Esa and Anneke, which you can read here.

Amo had a 360-degree video stream of the show up on YT, but unfortunately the video has gone private now. Maybe there's some kind of video release in works?

Indeed! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBCkm4VYo_Dhy8W6G55jyzMOwDX1HwRMh

At least I now have this as I was unable to attend the show. 360 degrees is awesome.

I'm just now getting into this band.  I've been listening to everything from "Elegy" onward.  :metal

Although, for some silly reason, I laugh every time I think of the lyrics to "From Earth I Rose."

Quote
I am a brother to the fire
To fire a brother I am
From breasts of maidens three
I drank the black milk
Devoured the white milk
I swallowed the red milk

I just imagine the narrator having one glass with Nesquik, another plain and then a third glass with Strawberry Nesquik.

Anyway, great band.

Thanks for the mental image of Tomi Joutsen sipping Nesquik :rollin

Speaking of those lyrics, you can read the English translations of Pekka Kainulainen's original poems (which the songs were based on) here: https://web.archive.org/web/20090721062814/https://www.amorphis.net/?page_id=230 You can also find the ones for Eclipse and Silent Waters there. It sucks that Amo's current website only consists of a social network wall, a list of tour dates and a bunch of links, because all the cool stuff like the band member bios and those poems are gone. :-\

Thanks.  Bookmarked for future use.

Foolishly, I also bought a ton of other music in the last few weeks.  I was behind with several bands and bought a lot of music.

I listened to everything once, but it's going to be many months before I familiarize myself with Amorphis.  Expect a top 10 sometime next year.

UPDATE:  This band has mastered the art of opening their albums with a great track.  I tried to make an Amorphis playlist, and 5 of the 16 songs were openers, which essentially means there's no way to make the playlist flow well.
