Yes, I already listened to Skyforger. Speaking of this, I should start compiling my list of forbidden bands. But my knowledge of Amorphis is so limited that I could very well allow it in the roulette.

^Thousand Lakes isn't 100% growls - there are some clean vox in a few songs. Actually I think it was one of the first (melodic) death metal albums to use the combination of both vocal styles, or at least it came out before anyone knew Opeth.
Really? I have to listen to it again. But ok, probably is their album with most growls.

And I'm not suggesting Am Universum at a starting point, unless you can't stand growls. I would say Eclipse is a great starting point.

You're fine, to Amorphis is to be as far away from fail as humanly possible.

QFT.

I've been listening to these bonus tracks a lot in the past 2 days and they are just pure awesomeness :2metal: I'm thinking about creating my own alternate tracklist for Circle... The album is already great as is, but it would be even better if some of these bonuses had been included.

Okay guys been hearing alot about this band but never checked them out

Where does a noob start?

Has there sound remained consistent or has the styles changed ? I ask this because I'm a metal guy first/prog secondly

Here's the important thing to understand about Amorphis, in my opinion: Yes, they're prog and metal, but they're also kind of folky and poppy. If you're looking for Opeth, you're not going to find them here. Amorphis are all about hooks and melody, not epics.

Their heaviest albums are probably Tales from the Thousand Lakes and Silent Waters. I would definitely recommend the former, and the latter too with the caveat that it has the exact kind of poor production you'd expect to hear from a death metal band finding their feet.

Their proggiest album is Elegy, I think, which also has its fair share of growls and might be my favorite of theirs overall.

For a good mix of the heavy and the proggy, I would recommend Eclipse, which is the first album of theirs I heard, and is the album I recommend most to people just starting out as fans.

My overall ranking of their output is as follows, if you're interested:

1. Elegy
2. Silent Waters
3. Eclipse
4. Tuonela
5. Am Universum or Skyforger
:TOX: <-- My own emoticon!

Plus TKI is quite a bit heavier than both of them.
I wouldn't really consider SW to be that heavy at all. There are like four songs on there with growls (maybe five, I'm not completely sure), and IMO only two of them are really "heavy"overall (Weaving The Incantation and A   Servant).

Yeah, TKI is definitely the heaviest. Actually I think Silent Waters is the softest Joutsen-era album, although it's probably the darkest - there's a lot of piano and acoustic guitar, and the heaviest songs aren't as aggressive as on the other albums (WTI being the exception).

Skyforger has more growls and none of the songs are as mellow as, say, Enigma or Black River. And of course there's Majestic Beast and the title-track giving extra heaviness :metal

Also, Tomi J. says they may play Dead Man's Dream live at some point! :caffeine:

This is my position as well. A really surprising album! (I am not very familiar with Amorphis and I didn't expect to like an album of their that much)

I've been a fan for about a year and was initially blown away by Skyforger.  Only familiar with mostly the last 4 or 5 albums, great style.  Definitely loving this new one, not as much as Skyforger but it should be the last one.

Hopeless Days is absolutely incredible.

After a month I still like the album a lot, although I think the tracklist could've been better if some songs had been replaced with the B-sides. Circle probably won't be a top 3 Amorphis album for me, but it is strong and will surely be among my favorite releases of 2013.

What are the b-sides?  My cd has Dead Man's Dream as a bonus track.  Is there others?

The bonus tracks (with the exception of His Story) are on YT:

My Future

Illusion
And since the link for New Song was broken, you can hear it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jP447Dl3j0

Looks like His Story is available too - I hadn't heard it until now :o

Wow, 4 bonus tracks, that's crazy for a 9 track album.  Silly me should have just checked wiki, they apparantely list another one called New Song?

Listening to My Future now.  What the hell were they thinking making this a bonus track?

Yeah, I linked New Song too. I'm not a fan of the way the bonus tracks have been scattered on different editions >:(

Agreed - I'm not a prog elitist, but making the second longest track in your discography a bonus track is a weird idea IMO.

I came up with an alternate tracklist for Circle recently and it looks like this:

1. My Future
2. Shades of Gray
3. New Song
4. Hopeless Days
5. Nightbird's Song
6. Illusion
7. Into the Abyss
8. Dead Man's Dream
9. Enchanted by the Moon
10. A New Day

Whoops, missed you posted New Song.  That's weird, 5 bonus tracks on a 9 track album with one being your second longest?  :lol

Will be interesting to check all of these bonus tracks.

I have used a few sites like that with around the same prices.  I mainly only use them to discover music.  If I really like something I'll purchse the cd, which is mainly the case for me.  I have Circle, but for the bonus tracks, I'm fine with this,

I checked the tour masterlist to see if they had plans to visit Italy and... whoa. What kind of huge popularity could push them to play 9 shows in Russia? (of which 8 consecutive)

Esa said they got an offer for a full tour in Russia, so looks like they took it. They want to visit as many places as possible on this world tour, which is also why they're finally coming to Australia. Besides, Russia is our eastern neighbor, so compared to bands from most countries it's relatively easy for Finnish groups to tour there.
