So the new Amorphis is amazing, just a little long. Drop "Reformation" and "Soothsayer" and it's perfect!
IMO Reformation is the best song without growls on the new album and Soothsayer is pretty awesome too. On a Stranded Shore is my least favorite.

After about 3 or 4 listens to the new album, I am quite happy with it.  Not as memorable as Skyforger IMO but it's very good, and it's a real grower.  Perhaps could have been cut down 2 or 3 tracks and it would have been perfect.  The first six songs are amazing and there are a couple of good ones later on in the album too.

I don't get what people see in Skyforger that makes them like it more than Eclipse or Silent Waters. Not saying that's your case, wolfking - I just thought about it after reading your post.

I see what you're saying.  It was my first Amorphis album, so I guess it's a little special.  And saying that, after the hype of Eclipse and Silent Waters, perhaps I expected too much and for me, they both don't live up to Skyforger.  I think seeing as I purchased Skyforger on a whim I had no expectations from it, and it really opened itself up to me.  I still think it's better than Silent Waters and Eclipse.

Well, it's a similar style, but executed better. Or at least that's how I see it.

I think Skyforger is the first Joutsen-era album not to feature a single filler song. (This continues on The Beginning of Times) On Eclipse there were a few fillers and on Silent Waters the less interesting song is Black River. Skyforger was also the first Amorphis album I bought right when it was released. It's also more diverse than Eclipse and Silent Waters; there are more growls (not as notably as on TBOT, though), but also more super-catchy songs with hit potential. Speaking of hits: Silver Bride was voted as the radio hit of the year 2009 in Finland! :metal

Yeah, I think that's it, Skyforger simply has no filler, while the other two do.  Silver Bride should have been a big hit, tremendous song.

Really?  What do you consider to be filler on Skyforger?

Looking back on it, I'm not sure the number of filler songs is my problem with Skyforger. My problem* with it is that it only has three killers, compared to Eclipse and Silent Waters which each have at least six.

* Take "problem" for what you will. I think Skyforger is a really good album.

Don't get me wrong, the fact that Skyforger has fewer growls is very much appreciated by me, and I think they had a perfect amount of growls on that album, but in general I just think the album is also better than the previous two, which I also love.

Skyforger has less growls? wat

Let's see which songs contain growls...

Eclipse
Leaves Scar
Perkele
The Smoke
Brother Moon

Silent Waters
Weaving the Incantation
A Servant
Towards & Against
The White Swan
(Sign)

Skyforger
Sampo
Silver Bride
Majestic Beast
Skyforger
From Earth I Rose
(Godlike Machine)
(Separated)

The Beginning of Times
Battle for Light
My Enemy
Song of the Sage
Three Words
Soothsayer
Escape
Crack in a Stone
Beginning of Time

Skyforger has 5 songs with growls (plus the bonus tracks), whereas Eclipse and Silent Waters have 4. Actually Highest Star has some growls too, but they are covered by the clean backing vocals. I think the growls are featured in less obvious parts: when I first heard Silver Bride, I was surprised to hear the growling in the end. The strong melodic elements also make Skyforger feel like a softer album than the previous 2, although it isn't.

While your investigation work is truly impressive, I'd say it fails to take in account how much growling there actually is per song.

Just in passing, if memory serves, aside from Majestic Beast is there really any other song dominated by growling on Skyforger? On the other albums it just seemed that more songs were heavily laced with growls.

Yeah, you're actually right. But I must add: half of the vocals on From Earth I Rose are growled. Also, both Eclipse and Silent Waters had only one song with more growls than cleans too (Perkele and A Servant), so I would say that Skyforger has more growling or at least the same amount.

I'm guessing Seperated another bonus track?  I have the digi with Godlike Machine, but haven't heard Seperated.  Any good?

Separated is the B-side of Silver Bride single and the Japanese bonus track of Skyforger. It can probably be heard on Youtube. Great song, wish it was on the album instead of Highest Star! The only thing I would change is the guitar noise at the end, I have never liked those (that's why I prefer the edited version of Misunderstood to the full version).

I agree with TOX, I find Eclipse and SW to easily be their strongest albums, but the others are still fantastic as well.

I recommend them too! :tup Looking forward to their second album...

I also recommend Kingston Wall, a great prog/psychedelic rock band which has highly influenced Amorphis.

If anyone is interested, Santeri Kallio and Tomi Koivusaari have a side project called Verenpisara. It's like Amorphis but less metal; Santeri composes all the songs and the lyrics are written by their vocalist, poet Rami Raski. I REALLY doubt you'll understand the lyrics since they are in Finnish (hell, even I have a hard time understanding some metaphors, despite being a Finn!), but the music itself is very kick-ass! :metal They have released 4 albums but I don't think those have been released outside of Finland.
