At this point Amorphis could release the biggest lump of turd imaginable and I would not care. In my books, they have four ridiculously good records, and their 20 or 30 best songs are legendary. Everything they do from now on is just gravy.

Esa said in an interview that years ago people criticized them for changing too much, and now there are complaints about not changing. He said that nowadays they prefer staying in the same style and evolving it to changing constantly. IMO they have made so many changes in style during their career that I don't care if they'll keep on doing albums like the last few, especially when they are very good!

That's a good point. Tales from the Thousand Lakes -> Elegy was a paradigm shift for obvious reasons. Elegy -> Tuonela was a paradigm shift because the growls were almost completely gone. Far from the Sun -> Eclipse was a paradigm shift because the growls came back. That's three paradigm shifts over like 10 years or something, which is more than most bands ever have, I feel like.

Far from the Sun -> Eclipse was a paradigm shift because they shit the bed on Far from the Sun

FTFY.  Tomi couldn't have saved FftS.  FftS has moments...but the best song on FftS probably isn't much better than the worst songs on Tuonela and AM Universum - to stick with the Pasi albums.

I'm talking about style not quality, but either way, yes, between Far from the Sun and Eclipse there was a huge change.

as much as I love AU and Elegy (the other two i know), I think the new material destroys the old.

I used to think that, but every time I listen to an old album, I love it more whereas every time I listen to a new album, it kind of stays the same. I would put Elegy and Tuonela above any of the new stuff.

The rerecorded Elegy stuff with Tomi is pretty intense, admittedly.

I think some of you fellow Amorphis fans could like Kingston Wall, they were a huge influence on Amorphis. I made a thread for them here: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=23753.0

After listening to the first nine songs, the only one that grabbed my soul and raped it into submission was "Battle for Light". Oh well. More listens required! This will be fun!

Best Buy's music selection officially sucks now.  No Amorphis this week.  Next time I'm up by a mall, I need to swing by FYE because I NEED TO HEAR THIS ALBUM.

Looking at the recent setlists, they have so far played the following new songs live:

Battle for Light
My Enemy
You I Need
Three Words
Crack in a Stone

I'm surprised at the lack of Mermaid. However, the latter 2 are among my favorites, hopefully they'll keep them in the setlist! :metal Wish they'd announce the Finnish tour dates already...

After a few more listens, I can add "Mermaid" the Amorphis list of soul-destroyers. The rest will need more time.

Indeed, Silent Waters is an amazing record, these songs were stuck in my head for a long time. I didn't dig the new album so much, but it has some amazing songs. Mermaid is my favorite.

Hoping to find Beginning of Times in store this weekend.  Wasn't available last weekend, so I'm getting very anxious for it.

So I like the Amorphis I've heard...are Silent Waters or the new album worth it?

Yes, and also Skyforger and Eclipse.

So the new Amorphis is amazing, just a little long. Drop "Reformation" and "Soothsayer" and it's perfect!

EDIT: I just spent 15 minutes throwing together some thoughts on TBoT and posted a review. Go discuss and maybe we can get some new people turned on to these guys!

Top 10 of Joutsen era in chronological order:

House of Sleep
The Smoke
Weaving the Incantation
Silent Waters
The White Swan
Sampo
Sky Is Mine
From Earth I Rose
Battle for Light
Mermaid
