"Although certain classes of argument from authority can constitute strong inductive arguments, the appeal to authority is often applied fallaciously fellatiously: either the authority is not a subject-matter expert, or there is no consensus among experts in the subject matter, or both"

Did anyone else read the above paragraph as I did (noting my edit)?

Nope?  No one?

Ok, never mind then.

Mad respect for the scoring Nem.  I might not agree with the scores, but I appriciate that you aren't an "easy A".

:iagree:

^This so much.  Too many roulette's just give high scores across the board.  Now, that could be a function that all the songs are really good, but I do recall following a roulette recently, where (10 point scale) a song that was actively disliked was given a 4 or 5 or something like that (no disrespect to whomever that was).  Too often it seems mid-level scores are handed out simply to avoid upsetting someone.

That's why I like the stack ranking method, and your 'binary' system, Doc (0 or 1, in or out, dead or alive).

Anyone participating in a roulette needs to put on their big boy/girl panties, and (to steal a line from RJ) not get all butt-hurt if a song is disliked.

By 'stack ranking' do you mean the system I (among others, if I recall correctly, you did this as well) used? Where the 'worst song' simply gets 1 point, and the 'best' gets 5, with everything else in between (or something along those lines)?

Yes, that is what he meant.  Also called a "must" system.  It helps spread scores out instead of having everyone at the top.

I understand, that's why I used it. But then I blew it all by using a wager system at the end, although mine was probably a bit complicated. The wager system, imo, is something that doesn't work either, since, at the end of your roulette, the person that has done best throughout can still lose to the last place who just happens to send a better song, just for once. Or something like that, it just kind of ruins the whole concept at the end and I will refrain from using ANY sort of wager in my next roulette.

Yeah, dumbass   Numbers burned me on that...I had a very big lead going into the last round, and I took a risk because it was all about musical discovery and I thought I had something he would like.  He ended up hating it and I got last place despite winning half the rounds.

About to start on cup #3!!!  :vfs:

Holy fuck!  That round was 'Lolzeez-quick'.  still anticipating a '3' though!

Open round... Thank-fucking-christ!!!  I was dying while trying to find something for the squinty-eyed round (yes, I know... SOOOOO politically incorrect!).  Then I stumbled on to perfection.

Jingle - Meat Loaf - For Cryin Out Loud 4

Chad is obviously not targeting a triumph, nor is he trying to defend his crown… he must have a hidden agenda… damn what is it?
It’s only me who gets to have a hidden vagenda here :P  (+1 to those who catch the reference)
That said… This was actually a touching piece.. I kinda regretted that I hadn’t heard this song in the years that I could actually appreciate it.. I am completely in a different world now…
Do you know that feeling when everybody loves a movie but you can’t get around seeing it.. and when you do, it is too late… you just don’t like it… (e.g. Titanic.. oh screw Titanic.. it’s a bad movie anyways.. let’s say Braveheart)--yeah start bitchin’
That’s pretty much how I feel about this song… you don’t need me to tell you that this is a gracefully arranged and masterfully delivered song…. So much so that it deserves a 9 at least for the thick parts, when the orchestration is there… the other parts drag a bit though… the song fails to justify its length……. also there’s tastes…. It simply doesn’t cater to mine… Re-play value is so low for me..

Onno - Dave Weckl - Like That 7
Dave Weckl.. what a beast of a drummer! .. his phrasing and the way he uses the cymbals are just tasteful.. I don’t listen to him that much anymore.. my ex was big on jazz and he was a huge fan of Dave Weckl's and Chick Corea's .. (RIP :P ) So as you might expect the association is there… hence the absence on Last FM… plus his Afro-Cuban-influence is not for me… but loved this one piece a lot! Good submission!

Ytse - Six Feet Under - Frozen At the Moment of Death 5

I’m familiar with their stuff.. Heard their tracks here and there.. they could never get me excited enough to make me want to check out more though… But I have to admit, this is one of the better songs I heard by them….still not my type of growls … I’m not heaviness for heaviness’ sake kind of girl… so this band keeps failing to rank high on my check out list.

Scorp - Wintersun - Winter Madness 8
Nice blend of power, symphonic and black metal .. complexity & melody are there… guitar sound is fantastic and these guys lay down some nice finger work out on the guitar. Brutal vocals are not on the forefront but more like an organic part of the sound along with the instruments…  Although it’s not my usual preference, it works well with black metal sound … Mastodon is another band that uses a similar  mix as their signature sound… so some bands get that right…

lonestar- Baroness- Rays of Pinion 9.5
Baroness !!! Despite a lot of listens how could I not see their beauty?! This song is melodic as hell… intricate and so very beautiful.... guitar harmonies coupled with steady drum work is just graceful… interestingly enough I loved the guitars to death even though the distortion is not thick enough for my taste … I have to credit the catchy, bouncy riffs for that… vocals, in the form of deep screams, is another sweet layer that works perfectly with all what’s going on…  Production work is so good too! This submission is the closest to what I expected from this round as the drums rumble along from start to finish and compliment everything impeccably! Well done chef!

Ruba - Sepultura - Desperate Cry 6
One of the bands that shaped my taste… seen them quite a few times… that’s all I’d like to say….

Elite - Toxik - Technical Arrogance 9
Man!!! The traffic of this song is sick!!!! The time signatures :o
This song got me so excited that I went and checked out a few more songs by the band… but the other ones I heard have more old-school vibe to them… On this song there’s a cool mechanical undercurrents, heavy distortion, crunchy tone and some synthetic sounds rather than organic.. it’s edgy and dirty, which all worked brilliantly for me! … Helluva submission!
The vocals are a bit low in the mix… also works well maybe because the instrumentation is masterful.. as the tone choice and delivery are perfect!

Lolzeez – haven’t submitted… two options.. I will either assess his submission with the next haul.. or a punishment point of -1 will be applied..

Overall, very good round! Easily the best so far.....  :tup

Elite     24,1
lonestar    20,8
Onno   20,7
Ytse   18
Ruba    17
Scorpion    17
Lolzeez   13,5
Jingle   10
