Huge meteor blazes across the sky over Russia
« on: February 15, 2013, 03:13:43 AM »
Quote
About 400 people were injured when a meteorite shot across the sky in central Russia on Friday sending fireballs crashing to Earth, smashing windows and setting off car alarms.

Residents on their way to work in Chelyabinsk heard what sounded like an explosion, saw a bright light and then felt a shockwave, according to a Reuters correspondent in the industrial city 1,500 km (950 miles) east of Moscow.

The meteorite raced across the horizon, leaving a long white trail in its wake which could be seen as far as 200 km (125 miles) away in Yekaterinburg. Car alarms went off, windows shattered and mobile phones worked only intermittently.

Chelyabinsk city authorities said about 400 people sought medical help, mainly for light injuries caused by flying glass.

This is crazy!  :omg:

Even though nobody was killed this news is not something people should take lightly though. It's damn scary how vulnerable and helpless we are against something like this.

I can tell the fragments (or was it only one?) was no larger than a couple of meter across. No more than 10m, I think. And we can't possibly  shield ourself nor detect meteorite this small.

On the other hand we should be concerned for bigger stuff. A 50m meteorite can potentially destroy a whole city, and it's damn difficult to identify them. We are keeping an eye on the truly deadly ones (~1km), but those are way easier to detect.

Yea i was think about this actually, there's always talk and worries about those big ones like "those that can destroy cities" or earth destroyers or whatever you wanna call them but a meteorite shower with thousands of small ones or something like that would cause alot of damage and would maybe be hard to spot. If we're only looking for the big ones those small ones may pass.

And it's not even the video with the actual explosion! I would have liked to be there, though.

Fuck that. Two things I want to be as far away from as possible:meteors grazing earth, and my ex-wife. So far I'm two for two, and I plan to keep it that way. :RJ:

Yeah i saw this last night. It's actually amazing. I feel bad for the people who got hurt and the damage it did, but the meteor itself is freekin awesome.

Truly amazing videos of this.

Is anyone watching footage of the asteroid passing? It was just spotted by observatories in Australia.

Like every other source of news, I take him with a grain of salt.  Some of his nonsense is just that...  but sometimes he does bring up some good points.  He is quite entertaining though.  My wife describes him as Rush Limbaugh turned up to 11.

That's just scary, 'cause I already consider Limbaugh more or less permanently cranked to 11.

This is the best one i've seen so far ^
Three questions about the video:

1. The date on the video?
2. Why does it seem like all driver's in Russia these days have a camera recording....in their car....all the time?
3. ..and they never seems to give a fuck during certain events?

The video is breathtaking though!  :omg:
