In studio performance of the entire album would be incredible.

I've wanted this since Metallica did it with St Anger.

I've never actually heard about this "in studio performance of entire album" thing before. What other bands have done this?

Wintersun, last year, and it came as a bonus DVD to the album. They left out an interlude or two, and the album itself is a shortie (I think it's not over 45 minutes) but they did it.

I don't expect it to be done here though.

Foo Fighters did a similar thing.

I was expecting there to be some extra on the limited edition, so a bonus DVD with a making-of doc and/or a "live in the studio" thing is quite likely.

I'm especially fond of Metallica's St. Anger studio performance. It sounds a lot better than the overproduced CD version IMO. The songwriting is still below par, but at least the band sounds natural.

Yeah, I love live studio takes. Certain bands should be doing that, anyway. I'm not trying to sound like a snob or anything but I really think live studio takes have a lot more character than recordings which have been sterilized and recorded piece by piece. Especially bands like DT, who don't really bother with doing a lot of stuff which couldn't be done in a live take anyway.

O RLY?

In my car, landing on "Overture" via shuffle and not skipping it would be the "controversial" thing to do :)

Besides, I had no idea "Overture" was particularly well-regarded. As far as I know, most people either don't like it or are just have no strong feelings about it one way or the other.

I think it's their best instrumental, and it kicks off DT's masterpiece perfectly.

Oh yes. It's not that great to start a song with six minutes of a cheesy artificial orchestra. DT has already done an Overture the right way, so why did they have to totally ruin a great song's beginning like this?

The main theme at the beginning of Overture is neat, but then it just kind of goes on and on, meandering about, and never really being that interesting.  I might very well like 6DOIT a lot more as a single piece of music if the Overture had been much better.  The fact that it is so obviously a keyboard trying to channel orchestra sounds and whatnot does not help its cause (since it is carrying the song).

Compared to the SDOIT Overture, Overture 1928 feels like a half-assed approach (as great a job as it does kicking off SFAM).
Aside from the synth orchestra (which I don't mind at all anyway), the SDOIT Overture is such a musical achievement for DT. It really showcases how much of an asset JR is to the band for orchestrating music (among many other examples, of course), and it remains so melodic throughout without resorting to chops (as can be said for the rest of the song).

But anyway, this is getting off topic for this thread. Perhaps to the controversial opinion thread, since the failure of your opinion is heresy.

Yup, exactly! Especially the bit about the way the orchestra sounds. So artificial. And not in that cool 80's obviously artifical way, but in the "trying too hard to sound real and failing" way.

It's slightly better sounding on Score, but it still suffers from being too long and meandering.

Anyway, circling back to the actual topic...

For me, DT are just one of those bands that usually sound better when they go for the stripped-down "live" feel.  Very few of their songs benefit from extra tinkering under special studio circumstances.  Here, I'm thinking not just of SDOIT, but also stuff like all the extra strings sections in the Octavarium album.  So, yeah, I full support a "Live in the Studio" type album mix.

There is no indication of this. Actually, less than a week ago the band published a piece of the Q&A video series where Mike Mangini confirmed that every song performed will be featured on the upcoming DVD.

Yeah, the excitement is dead.

But that doesn't matter. As soon as a date is set and another trailer (with audio) is released, people will get pumped again.
