Classic Rock Vocal Showdown #2: Walsh vs DeYoung
« on: January 26, 2013, 02:03:22 PM »
Ok, let's keep this train rollin'.  First thing to state is that the vocalists I defined as 'classic' all had their hey-day in the 60s or 70s.  Some endured and still put out great stuff after that; some coasted on their success; some faded into oblivion.  But, most of their best output came in the 60s or 70s.  With that out of the way....

Another tier-1 showdown, more progressive this time though.  Steve Walsh of Kansas vs Dennis DeYoung of Styx.  For my money, DeYoung is one of my favorite vocalists.  Smooth, powerful and what a range.

At least this one is a contest.    I honestly had a tough time choosing.   As far as pure vocal ability, I'd say it's a dead heat.  So the tiebreaker comes down to who's classic catalog I'm more attached to, and that would be Styx.

DDY for me in a photo finish.

This is very tough since I love both but I like Steve Walsh a little more.  Both are versatile but I like Walsh's gritty voice a little more and that seals the deal for me.

Steve Walsh. Carry On Wayward Son seals that deal for me. (His performance, not the song itself.)

Walsh, easily. I like Styx, but of the 3 original vocalists DeYoung is my least favorite. I don't dislike his voice but he kind of gets on my nerves. Steve Walsh, on the other hand, is one of my favorite singers of all time.

Walsh is great, but he doesn't hold a candle to DeYoung as far as I'm concerned.

Both great singers, but Walsh's voice has a lot more character. Find some live recordings from his prime... the guy had some pretty freakish ability. If only he had taken a little better care of himself.

It's not one of my favorite Kansas songs at all, but I always think of "It's You" as one of the great examples of his ability. The 1:43 mark, in particular.

And now I just got to his high pitched "oohs" at the end of "The Pinnacle." Dear God.

Both of these guys would be in my all-time top 10, but I gotta go with Walsh.  DeYoung's voice held up longer over time (his voice still sounded awesome in the mid to late 90s, while Walsh's sounded scratchy and a bit rough), but Walsh's prime is unmatched.

 Touch choice....

but...

DeYoung.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces
