Recommend me some TV series on DVD
« on: January 18, 2013, 12:40:29 PM »
Okay, my DVD player feels lonely...
Stuff I love: Breaking Bad, Lost, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Malcolm in the Middle (too bad only Season 1 got released).
I also enjoyed Battlestar Galactica, Serenity, Band of Brothers.

You might also add movies.

So, any suggestions? Older or new, funny or serious - whatever. I enjoy reading SF and fantasy, so might be from these genres, too.

Mad Men is great.  Couldn't get into Fringe at all.  We just started with Homeland too.

Party Down
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
House, M.D.
Workaholics
American Horror Story
Louie
Sons of Anarchy
Game of Thrones

I'm currently watching Mad Men, which is pretty delightful; as well as The Wire, which I'm going to start tonight (although I've seen episodes here and there).

Justified is really good as well, forgot about that one.

How about Justified.  Season 4 just started a couple of weeks ago.  I got season 1 and 2 for my wife.  The price here is middle tennessee was 20.00 for seasons 1 and 2.  Season 3 is still a bit pricy.

The series is set in rural Kentucky but I believe is filmed in California.

Great series.

The Wire

If you are looking for serious, this is as good as it gets.

Game of Thrones

If you are into fantasy, this is as good as it gets.

If you're interested in a more scifi show, maybe Doctor Who, which I've recently gotten into thanks to Rob.

You may also be interested in The Sopranos if you are interested in a show with incredible scope and a large ensemble cast. Full of great characters, its only second to The Wire in that regard.

EDIT: also this

Do some throwback:

Based on what you like this may come in handy:

Breaking Bad: Prison Break
Lost: Fringe
Battlestar Galactica: Firefly (You have seen Serenity but not Firefly? or do you mix those two?)
Band Of Brothers: Generation Kill and The Pacific
Monty Python's Flying Circus: Fawlty Towers  :) and Arrested Development (Which i actually have not seen but i'm about to)

The 5 "Great Dramas" are:

The Wire
Deadwood
The Sopranos
Mad Men
Breaking Bad

Those are all essential (you've watched Breaking Bad, so get on the rest of them!)

The consensus for the best comedies of the past decade or so are:

The Office (UK)
Arrested Development

After that there are a whole bunch of great comedies like Party Down, Archer, The Thick of It, 30 Rock, etc.

As for miniseries, you mentioned you liked Band of Brothers, so I'd definitely recommend its successor The Pacific, as well as Generation Kill.

I have both.

Monty Python's Flying Circus: Fawlty Towers  :) and Arrested Development (Which i actually have not seen but i'm about to)

Yeah, forgot about Fawlty Towers. Love that one, too!

I second this. An absolutely hilarious show. Almost every line of dialogue is a joke. Incredibly well put together. Three seasons are out now and a fourth is on its way in May.

yeah, I was going to mention 24, but I kept thinking about how it really started to get samey and trail off in the last few seasons.  The first few seasons were excellent.
