Rush - Dream Theater - dream concert
« on: January 17, 2013, 11:56:51 AM »
What a concert it would be to see Rush and Dream Theater together in concert.  Here is my dream set list for each assuming about 2 hours a piece:

Rush
Anthem, Bastille Day, Jacobs Ladder, Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Analog Kid, Headlong Flight, Lakeside Park, Passages to Bankok, Witch Hunt, Bravado, Cygnus X-1, The Trees, 2112(full song), Something for Nothing, Caravan, ByTor and the Snowdog, Working Man, LaVilla Strangiato

Dream Theater
6:00, Metropolis part 1, Burning my Soul-Hells Kitchen, These Walls, Shattered Fortress(I know I am dreaming at this point), Bridges in the Sky, Overture 1928-Strange Deja vu, Honor Thy Father, Under a Glass Moon, Home, Blind Faith, Breaking all Illusions

Rush circa 1980 called, they want half their setlist back :lol

Really though, that would be QUITE the dream, but unlikely. Given the recent trend of the last couple tours, songs from the 80's and 90's would be more likely, and I'd LOVE to see more HYF and Presto material.

And if they were doing a concert with DT, I'd love to hear more keyboard/synth-era songs, just to sort of even-it-out with DT, who are also a bit keyboard heavy from time-to-time, so anything from Signals-Presto would be great.

As for DT, music from the earlier albums (WDADU-FII) would be good choices, especially as they are rarely played these days, and toss in a few lighter numbers from later on. I think a Rush audience would enjoy their more proggy/light (i.e. less heavy/dark/rawr-metal) material.

Rush - (Opening Act):
Anything from AFtK/PW/Hemisphere
Encore: 2112

Dream Theater
Whatever - except nothing from FII (unless it is Trial of Tears), and not Constant Motion or The Dark Eternal Night

I would pay big bucks for this show.

I'm not enough of a Rush fan to come up with a great setlist for them.

And while any Dream Theater is good Dream Theater, I think I'd make a few personal changes from what you've got planned. Burning My Soul, These Walls, Shattered Fortress, and Honor Thy Father are all among my least favorite Dream Theater songs.

This'll be fun! I'm going to try and make a setlist that is realistic. Also, something that both band's fans would be interested in listening to. So basically no Honor Thy Father or Tears, even though those songs are really good.

Dream Theater:
1. Overture 1928
2. Strange Deja Vu
3. Blind Faith
4. On the Backs of Angels
5. Take the Time
6. Erotomania
7. Trial of Tears
~Intermission~
8. One Last Time
9. The Spirit Carries On
10. Endless Sacrifice
11. I Walk Beside You
12. Solitary Shell
13. About to Crash (reprise)
14. Losing Time / Grand Finale
15. Pull Me Under
~Encore~
16. Jacob's Ladder (Rush cover)
17. Metropolis Pt. 1

A little above 2 hours (without talking, intermission, etc).

Rush:
1. Overture
2. The Temples of Syrinx
3. Freewill
4. Subdivisions
5. Headlong Flight
6. One Little Victory
7. Far Cry
8. Red Barchetta
9. Leave That Thing Alone
10. Caravan
11. Limelight
~Intermission~
12. The Spirit of Radio
13. Closer to the Heart
14. Force Ten
15. The Pass
16. Stick it Out
17. The Analog Kid
18. Marathon
19. The Trees
20. The Garden
21. The Enemy Within
22. La Villa Strangiato
~Encore~
23. Tom Sawyer
24. A Farewell to Kings (tuned down)
25. YYZ

Just a tad below 2 hours (without talking, intermission, etc).

~Rush leave stage for indefinite amount of time, both bands eventually come back on~
26. Dream Theater Medley (Instrumental) (The Crimson Sunrise, The Darkest of Winters, The Crimson Sunset, Hell's Kitchen, The Dance of Eternity, Learning to Live [middle section w/ F# and outro])
27. Mike Mangini / Neil Peart Drum Duet
28. Rush Medley (Full bands) (Working Man [w/ trading guitar solos, intro - 4:59], Anthem [intro - 1:49], The Necromancer [9:20 - outro], Xanadu / Cygnus X-1 Medley [2:03 - 5:56, 8:07 - 9:32], Hemispheres [Prelude / Armageddon], Natural Science [1:56 - 5:03], The Camera Eye [6:46 - 10:24], 2112 [Grand Finale]

Okay, so that last part is definitely too far-fetched. Still, the other parts are a pretty good representation of both bands' discographies while being setlists that are plausible.

If Rush comes back to Nashville with the current setlist from the Clockwork Angels tour, I would have to think about going only because I like the heavy stuff from Rush and the first half is full of that 80's stuff   Cannot wait to see Dream Theater.  Will probably have to travel to Atlanta to see them, but well worth the trip from Nashville.

16. Jacob's Ladder (Rush cover)

Already saw it.  It was glorious.

I always wondered what a 90 minute DT opening set would look like with Rush.  Bear in mind, at least 1/2 the crowd wouldn't know DT at all, or only superficially at best (at least, in North America).  They'd have to play Rush-accessible songs... nothing too long (TCOT is out), or too heavy (forget Glass Prison).  Remember that they had a super heavy set when they opened for Maiden (As I Am, A Rite of Passage, Home, Pull Me Under and Constant Motion) to cater to that crowd.

Under A Glass Moon
Voices
Wither
Surrounded
A Fortune In Lies
Blind Faith
The Way It Used To Be
Breaking All Illusions
Learning to Live
Encore: Metropolis Pt 1

1.4 hours... that leaves time for mixing up the arrangement, and gaps between songs.

Rush - can't begin to fathom how they'd only do a 2 hour set.  It's been 20+ years since they had an opening act.
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad

Dream Theater:
6:00
Take The Time
Solitary Shell
Another Won
Overture 1928/Strange Deja-Vu
Breaking All Illusions

Rush (accompanied by string section):
Limelight
Middletown Dreams
Roll the Bones
The Anarchist
The Wreckers
Open Secrets
Red Barchetta
Drum Solo
The Garden
2112 Overture/Priests of Syrinx/Grand Finale

At this point, Rush would be joined by Dream Theater:

YYZ
Marathon
Subdivisions
Pull Me Under

Encore:
Medley of La Villa Strangiato, A Change of Seasons, Working Man (with trading solos for every instrument), One Last Time, Fly by Night, The Count of Tuscany, and Tom Sawyer (A Rush concert without Tom Sawyer, surely you jest.)

I agree with it probably never will happen.  I wonder if during interviews the question has ever come up about them touring together.  They would fits as well or better with Rush than with Iron Maiden.

Question about DT tours as headliner.  Is the opening band normally a heavy band?  Seems like I saw something on this site about some folks seeing them with Trivium.  Some liked the band and some thought they were more a thrash band.

Off topic, but one of the reasons I like Rush and DT is they play prog or hard rock.  I especially like DT because of the vocals.  Sometimes Geddy's voice is a bit annoying.

In the past the opening acts for DT have ranged wildly, from the Galactic Cowboys in the early days, to Rudess/Morgenstein in the FII era, to Porcupine Tree in the last leg of the SFAM tour to end with the most recent openers:

Trivium - 2011 US Leg
Andy McKee - 2011 NA-CA minileg / Asian leg
Periphery - 2012 EU leg
Krimson Project - 2012 US leg

Of those, I would define only Trivium and Periphery as heavy. So, I think it's safe to say that there isn't a trend of inviting heavier bands to open for them.

Yeah, me too.  Just moved to Alabama this year.  Previously I've always lived places that most acts would visit, like LA and the east coast cities.  Looks like I'll be driving 3 hours to friggin' Atlanta to be able to see anything from now on  :(

Never say Never  :hat

Back in '04 at a M&G I was talking to JLB about rumors of a Rush/DT tour.  He said they were really trying to make it happen, the killer was  a management issue and if I remember correctly it didn't jive with Rush's 30 yr tour.  I think it would be incredible.

Rush keeps talking about hanging it up someday....but they also talk about the possibility of "scaling it down" every single time they go out.   Alex has admitted that they are getting tired, and every tour, the possibility of going back down to an hour an a half with an opening act comes up.

They havn't done it yet...but *IF THEY DID*, having DT as an opening act would be a nice compensation.

If that happens, it might possibly be the greatest double-billing in rock concert history. Maybe.

Seriously, though, 1-1.5 hours of DT, followed about 1.5-2 hours of Rush would be INSANELY AMAZING, and I'd be happy with whatever either band played.

I would love to see this, but honestly I can't imagine it happening. I really can't see Rush going back to playing shows with an opener (I think they'd retire from touring before that happens), especially DT. A lot of Rush fans (the ones that post online, anyway) don't like DT and others have no clue who they are.

If this did happen, I'd like to see a co-headlining tour. Around 1.5 hours of each band. Rush's 3 hour shows are really around 2.5 hours if you don't count the video clips and intermission/encore break. If they ditched Neil's drum solo and the videos then they'd still be able to play a decent amount of music.

If Rush were gonna bring a newer act (meaning, not as old as them :lol) on tour with them again, I doubt Dream Theater would be high on their list of bands they'd choose from.  Hell, Porcupine Tree would stand a much greater chance of opening for them (since Peart and Lifeson are both admittedly HUGE fans of theirs).
