THAT moment in THAT song.
« on: January 07, 2013, 05:03:20 PM »
Let's talk about moments in songs that make you want to headbang/smile/cry/scream or something.
You know, those little seconds that can make a song  go from "ok" to "amazing". Let's just talk about dem moments dem in songs bros.

Like this song's climax at 3:20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oRlpGyI1rg
Pure magic.

And this one from The Alan Parsons Project. That ending. That solo. That everything.

I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

Big Big Train-from 8:47 onward in Victorian Brickwork. MAGNIFICENT.
The bones of beasts and the bones of kings become dust in the wake of the hymn.
Mighty kingdoms rise, but they all will fall, no more than a breath on the wind.

Fucking YES. Everything from that moment on is pure gold as far as I'm concerned. Not only the highlight of the song but probably the highlight of the album.

Here's some from me:

The Mars Volta - Noctourniquet 2:45
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjk_RFfGuNc
(EDIT: How could I even mention this album without including the Deshera section of In Absentia?)

Black Sabbath - Killing Yourself to Live 1:45 (that entire solo)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PV1tlEm2uI

No-Man - Photographs in Black and White 5:11 onwards is just divine.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onzqvRXD6oE

Just off the top of my head, like.

There - walking into walls
Piercing through the pain
Here we are
Reaching through the rain
I almost caught a glimpse
Brighter than the sky
A child grown
A stranger coming home

Some epic climaxes (there are many, many more, but these were the first ones that came to my mind):

DT - 10.02 in In the Name of God, 5.57 in Honor Thy Father, 4.31 in Space-Dye Vest, "watch the sparrow falling" in Pull Me Under

Porcupine Tree - 6.16 and later 11.05 in Anesthetize (:omg:), 5.31 in Strip the Soul

Paradise Lost - 3.56 in Over the Madness (dat solo! :hefdaddy), 3.24 in No Forgiveness, 4.28 in The Glorious End (the chorus is epic on the first time already, but the second chorus is simply one of the best moments in their entire catalogue)

Katatonia - 2.14 in Leaders, 1.46 in Dead Letters, 3.06 in Liberation, 3.32 in Brave, 6.52 in 12

Opeth - 5.45 in Hessian Peel, 5.34 in The Drapery Falls, 8.24 in Bleak, 4.08 in Ghost of Perdition

Chroma Key - 3.09 in Subway

Not as big a Mahavishnu fan as many, but the first two songs on The Inner Mountain Flame have cool moments like that,  both involving the alternating of two notes that segues into a flurry of emotion.  (Meeting of the Spirits, when the C# and E lick turns into a sick guitar solo and similarly in Dawn when the "ostinato" of the B and Gs turn into something deliciously tasty and full of pathos.

Funny you mention Honor Thy Father.  I would have gone with 7:36 in that song.  That's one of the first things I thought of when I read this thread-- it's a really distinctive moment.  Another one is Great Debate, 6:55 to 7:10.

EN, TO, TRE, FIRE!...
NÅ SKA ME EIN LITEN SANG! and immediately after when all the instruments come in just makes me want to headbang really hard.

BTBAM - Telos

Funnily enough, someone else apparently liked that section enough to upload it without the rest of the song.

That part in HTF is cool, but it doesn't strike me the way that darker and more evil-sounding version of the "crooked step" riff does. I do agree with you on TGD, though.
