Dammit! How could I forget!

Super Duper Comeback kid of the Year Award: Van Halen - A Different Kind Of Truth...

Also: Semi super duper (but very commendable) and rather unexpectably good and nice comeback kid of the year: Soundgarden - King Animal.

From the ocean comes the notion that the realise lies in rhythm. The rhythm of vision is dancer, and when you dance you´re always on the one. From the looking comes to see, wondrous realise real eyes....

Edited my original post to add another honorable mention:

Pyramid Theorem - s/t ---- Musically, these guys kill.  And their debut album is a very solid effort that would definitely make my top 10 albums for the year.  With a power-vocalist in the vein of Jorn or old-school Russell Allen, these guys would conquer the progmetal scene in no time.

I'd rather have the guy from Reverence or Speaking To Stones.
I know it's just me but as talented as Allen and Lande are, they are kind of cold to me and I just don't feel them.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

I've never heard of "Reverence" but I agree that the guy from "Speaking to Stones" is killer.  Check out his other band "Section A" as well.  Little bit more on the power metal side of things, but their first two albums are great.

But anyway, this is why I specified "OLD SCHOOL" Russell Allen or Jorn.  Especially with Russell Allen.

In no order, and I'm not sure I can actually recall everything released...

Beyond the Bridge - The Old Mand and the Spirit
Ne Obliviscarus - Portal
Neal Schon - The Calling (lots of good fusion with Steve Smith and Jan Hammer)
Stolen Babies - Naught
Hardline - Danger Zone

Here's five with a little random elaborating:

1. Deftones - Koi No Yokan

I was always a casual Deftones fan, but this album just made me appreciate them so much more. What makes this album special for them is their ventures into more 'pretty' songwriting, while still retaining an undeniable heaviness. Adding to that, you can clearly hear they were going for an album, with every song complimenting the previous one in awesome ways. It flows. This is the kind of album where I have my go-to favorites, but without any song being less good than another song.

2. Gojira - l'Enfant Sauvage

One of the best metal bands on earth doing what they do so well, but even better. It's totally in line with my idea of 'heaviness'. Listening to the entire album front to back isn't really interesting for me, but for the pleasure I have had from certain tracks this year, makes it a top pick nonetheless.

3. Storm Corrosion - Storm Corrosion

It's good, especially 'Drag Ropes', the title track and 'Ljudet Innan'. I don't care so much about the other tracks, but I'm extremely thankful for these beautiful songs. I used 'Ljudet Innan' as background music when my girlfriend's sister got married in the city hall.

4. Meshuggah - Koloss

It's Meshuggah, the grooves are there and they're at exactly the right tempo. I don't really understand the inclusion of 'The Demon's Name is Surveillance'. I don't like it by any stretch of the imagination. The rest is golden IMO and this time they also got the production right. Love the warm sound even though the mastering is even hotter than ObZen's.

5. Burial - Kindred

It seems the more into his career, the more his musical identity is revealed. Burial keeps up with the trend of making every release better than the previous one, and even though this is an EP in running time, it feels more like a three suite mini album. I'm in love with the mood Burial's music brings me in.

Honorable mentions:

Baroness - Yellow & Green

Very ambitious, but there's a lot of weak singing on it. There's also a lot of good singing on it. There's some great songs but also some not-so-great ones. But overall I appreciate the band taking risks with their sound and songwriting. They've created new musical possibilities but the execution is where it sometimes falls flat. Plentry of room to grow. Though 'Eula' is epic as hell and one of my favorite songs of the year.

Muse - The 2nd Law

To me it sounds like Muse don't care about being authentic or serious on this album. It's all just good fun and it sounds fantastic (the production really shines when you listen to it on headphones). 'Animals' and 'Save Me' add some well needed 'real' emotion to the album. All in all I still have to say this might be my least favorite Muse album yet.

Disappointment of the year:

Devin Townsend - Epicloud

I don't know man. I'm a huge Devin fan, and I feel really blessed to have met him in person once. I basically adore everything he creates, but I just can't get into this record. Sounds to me he really likes the cheesy pop nowadays. 'Addicted' had that too, but at least that record sounds awesome. The production on this one sounds lifeless to me. I don't know, maybe I'll like it one day. Flame shield on?

Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

My top 3:
1. Rush - Clockwork Angels
2. Storm Corrosion - Storm Corrosion
3. Devin Townsend - Epicloud

I left it at three since they are the only ones I really love. Others:

The Flower Kings - Banks of Eden - Good CD, but failed to really suck me in like most of their others, once the newness of it wore off.

GY!BE - 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! - Another good one, but kind of comes across as more of the same old, same old from them.  That isn't necessarily a bad thing, though.  Mladic is beyond awesome.

VH - A Different Kind of Truth - Better than I thought it would be, and there are definitely a handful of really good tunes on this. Still can't touch the best original Roth stuff or three of the four Hagar albums.

Muse - The 2nd Law - Good, but Muse is not making the improvements I had hoped for.  This is the second CD in a row I would label as merely "good."

Neal Morse - Momentum - The usual proggy goodness from Neal. Not one of his best, but still really good.

Trevor Rabin - Jacaranda - This all-instrumental CD, different from his previous solo efforts, is surprisingly really good.

Flying Colors - Flying Colors - Very solid CD, outside of a couple of bum tracks. Has four or five legitimately great songs.

1. Periphery - Periphery II: This Time It's Personal
2. BTBAM - Parallax II
3. Coheed & Cambria - The Afterman: Ascension
4. The HAARP Machine - Disclosure
5. The Faceless - Autotheism

Mentions:
Foxy Shazam - The Church of Rock & Roll
Zelliack - Noir Tones EP (would be high up on the top 5 if it wasn't an EP)
The Safety Fire - Grind the Ocean
Monuments - Gnosis

really couldn't get into the new Rush album, it just bored me and I kept trying to say it was good just because it was made by Rush. The only songs I enjoyed were Caravan and BU2B and those are really old.

Arjen Anthony Lucassen - Lost In The New Real (this album does not have a single redeeming quality)

When Nick comes to murder you, I'll have your back.

I wouldn't go so far to say there isn't a single redeeming quality.  If you give in to the quirkiness of it (lol-lyrics), and of his vocals, it's not too bad.  Definitely in the bottom tier of Arjen output... ok, maybe the absolute bottom now that I think about it, but it's still pretty decent.

He'll redeem himself with the Ayreon album this year.
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad

2. The Mountain Goats - Transcendental Youth
3. Jack White - Blunderbuss
4. The Mars Volta - Noctourniquet
5. Maps & Atlases - Beware and Be Grateful

I totally forgot about Fort Lean's Change Your Name EP. It only has four songs, but it's better than most of the LPs that came out last year.
