Please recommend some instrumental music
« on: January 05, 2013, 03:52:23 AM »
So, I've always loved instrumental music. A lot. Music with vocals generally has higher highs than instrumentals, but frequently has lower lows due to bad vocals or obnoxious lyrics. I can enjoy instrumentals just about any time. I've kind of hit a wall trying to find new music to listen to, so I need help.

Anyway, I'd like some instrumental or primarily instrumental music recommendations please. I won't list what I already like because it would take too long. :D Any genre is alright (rock, electronic, solo piano, whatever), but I'm not a big fan of jazz other than jazz fusion. And I'm not exactly looking for classical stuff right now even though I enjoy a lot of it.

:)

Niacin is probably my favorite instrumental band. Hammond oriented fusion trio. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KK78q3D6q6w
I'm also really fond of Derek Sherinian's albums, both solo and Planet X.
Paul Gilbert too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCuHAfOPlBI

Sycsa is perhaps the most brilliant and insightful man I have ever encountered.

Banda Black Rio - Maria Fumaça (fusiony funk, great toe-tapping music with no R&B type vocals to bring it down)

Caldera - Caldera (fusion, kind of like RTF with latin jazz-funk mixed in, not as overtly funk as Banda Black Rio but maybe more up your alley)

Also, have you checked out this thread; very good recommendation if want something more modern.

If you want some ambient/drone I personally like Somnaire and I keep meaning to check out Bass Communion too, as what I've heard from that project is pretty neat.
This is as exciting as superluminal neutrinos. The sexy thing is that this actually exists :D

Thanks for the recommendations! I'm checking them out. So far, out of the suggestions I wasn't already familiar with, my favorites are Canvas Solaris, Chimp Spanner, Mono, Niacin (although I kinda knew them from samples), and Kaki King.

Keep the ideas coming!

Trioscapes. They're Jazz-metal fusion and super awesome.
I only listen to electro-post dubprog.  You've probably never heard of it.

Guthrie Govan - One of my new favorite guitarists. Solo album Erotic Cakes is great.
The Aristocrats - Guthrie Govan, Marco Minnemann, Bryan Beller. They're awesome.
Änglagård - First album has vocals, but the other two are instrumental. Very retro prog, and very lush sounding.
Gosta Berlings Saga - I don't really know how to describe this, but they're excellent. Listen to the song Island to get a feel for their music.
Mörglbl - Jazzy power trio. I'm not sure if I'd call it fusion but I liked their last album.
The Fierce and The Dead Great proggy post-rock. Their stuff is name your price to download. I highly reccomend their latest EP On VHS. (https://thefierceandthedead.bandcamp.com/album/on-vhs)

ANALOGMAN
FNDMNTL
Breath

All bands are jazz-oriented with electronic-based backings with some sampled-voice overs that work really well for the type of music. Think Chroma Key with a bit more jazz and electronic (very mellow) influences. Breath is downright baby-making music. Love it.

dont let the sheer weight of them there riffs consume you. theyll make you nauseous.

attention deficit - the idiot king. great song writing, playing, and variety from this trio. and you might swear on your mother's grave that there's keyboards, but the band assures you that your ears are being deceived by guitar manipulation.

the esseness project. even better song writing and playing (and also largely devoid of keyboards). i could go on and on about the compositional brilliance. accessibly complex with dynamics mostly unrivalled in the instrumental world. theres times when you'll find three distinct bass parts. im not talkin bout layering. you'll get a driving bass riff, with a seperate bass melody, as another bass part solos over top. and while all thats going on, youll also get a seperate guitar melody and possibly an atmospheric guitar part. i would say check out It's all In Your Mind if you can find it; they kinda run the gamut on that one.

in the past year ive also gotten into estradasphere quite a bit. avantegarde instrumental isht. youll get anything and everything from those guys.

some other favorite have already been mentioned, like blotted science, morglbl, and animals as leaders. morglbl remind me of a more experimental version of OHM. i know you aint lookin for jazz fusion type stuff, but their album Circus Of Sound is most excellent.

and im sure you know of liquid tension experiment. and jordan rudess solo material.

and dear gawd, i hope youre aware of mr. vai.

I think that you are wrong. Instrumental music can be just as amazing as music that use lyrics.

I agree that instrumental music can be just as amazing. If I ranked all the music I've heard it would be like:

The top: mostly vocal songs with some instrumentals
The middle: good mix of instrumental and vocal
The bottom: mostly vocal songs with few instrumentals

I have Lift Yr. Skinny Fists and I'm not really a fan. Sorry. And part of that reason is their usage of long samples of people talking, which takes away from the instrumental aspect. Do their other albums have less samples?

But that aside, good song, although I wish the drummer would hit the skins a little harder, like Indian's drummer.  I swear to god someone needs to call protective services for his drums, he fucking wails on them.
