It's a concept album about not being a concept album at all, and part of the concept is that none of the lyrics or music will be related at all.

I think DedSurroun was parodying DT's DVD announcement in his post.

I really hope this is true :lol

I'm also secretly hoping that either The Drowner of Huron or Get Back in Mah Car will be the Easter Egg!

Since I just described a regular album, I'd say it's pretty certain you'll get your wish. :lol

I'd love for it be a thematic album, one that has recurring musical themes and similar lyrical topics from song to song.

I don't think that "epic" will be 20+ minutes long. I guess it's more like BAI.

And I really doubt that the album is a concept album.

Regular or not doesnt matter to me, I just hope they really have poured their souls and technical skills into the album, and are really proud of it. That everyone in the band have got their voices and concerns heard, compromises for the win!

I'd like a looser concept album, not something with like different characters and rock-opera parts, but subtle. Like Tales.

Yeah, that's what I'm rooting for as well. A diversified album held together by a coherent theme both musical and lyrics. The ideal for me. :)

Isn't that what we got with the last one? Every song represents some sort of a "dramatic" turn of events. Lol.

Yes, but it's not something that gets overused so quickly, being a very loose form of concept.

Although to be fair, the majority of DT's albums, especially since Jordan joined, all had a loose concept at least. Six Degrees, Octavarium, Black Clouds all had a certain theme going. Even ToT to an extent, although the theme was more sonic and less lyrical.

Something like Six Degrees disc 2 would be awesome, like a "mini" concept record that doesn't really tell a story or have lines that represent character dialog (those kinds of albums are cheesy), but is united by an overarching concept and several common themes anyway. I'm also thinking along the lines of dredg's "El Cielo"... something a little less than the full-blown rock opera prog metal is drenched with, but still a bit more than the usual "theme" albums DT do.

I would love something like Leprous did with Coal last month, where the songs are somehow connected musically that gives them a distinct sound, something that tells you "this songs belongs on this album and on no other album". Like DT did this back on TOT with the distinct "prog Metallica sound" and the "cold" sound of Awake.

I really don't see what's so bad in story-based concept albums.
IMO, if you have a good plot, or even a basic story background, the album could turn out pretty good.
For example, Kamelot's "Silverthorn". I think it's great, and it's totally story-based.
Also, I don't think that SFAM's story is bad, unlike some of the members here.
I'm a fan of concept albums generally, and I really think that if DT12 turns out to be a concept, it would be great :)

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Yea i wouldn't mind a full on concept album, i don't know why so many are against it? It dosen't have to be a full blown rock opera just be cause it's a concept album.

Mama, I just killed a man. Put a gun against his head. Pulled my trigger, now he's dead...and then I pointed the gun at Victoria. You should have heard her cry. She closed her eyes and wished to be in a dream she could wake up from as danger loomed nearer. She envisioned a theater of dreams, where she could just walk out of this nightmare as if it was a bad movie. And just as the killer attempted to pull the trigger...

Find out what really happened on that fateful moonlight night in "Metropolis Pt. 3: Dream Theater".
