I bet JP's solos on this album are going to be fantastic! (as always I should say...) :metal

And, the tracklisting should be finished now since JP is done with the lyrics...unless JMX or JLB is still working on theirs (assuming JLB is writing one)

Seems like they might have taken a bit of extra time for the lyrics.

Yeah, I guess I figure recording starts after everything's written, and if they're still working on lyrics, then things aren't actually done being written yet.  But maybe it's just some fine-tuning of lyrics, since vocals are done last anyways, and they went ahead and started laying tracks while lyrics were still being finished up, figuring there could be some overlap.

Yes, that's exactly what they stated in various interviews or status updates

Did they not say they were tracking as the music was being constructed so all that's left to do is the guitar solos and the vocals?
The creation and destruction of harmonic and 'statistical' tensions is essential to the maintenance of compositional drama. Any composition (or improvisation) which remains consonant and 'regular' throughout is, for me, equivalent to watching a movie with only 'good guys' in it, or eating cottage cheese.

It's not uncommon for bands to finish writing all the music before a single lyric is written.

U2 once famously recorded vocals for a song while the album was being MASTERED.

I had a dream last night...

I was pulling up to my house from work when I saw a camera crew set up in the parking lot I usually park in.... Turns out DT were shooting a video for the single off the album. I stood kinda on the side watching in disbelief when the director yelled something about a guy not being there and they needed a hand with something Next thing I knew I was pulled in and told I needed to push a wheelbarrel with Mangini sitting in it into the scene.. I don't remember the rest but when it was all said and done I was given a gift wrapped copy of the new album.

And my alarm went off as I was opening it -_-
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I hope you realize that from now on the world will not be complete if the band doesn't aknowledge and then stage your dream. Do you relize the damage you have done? You are the rotted root in the DTF-tree. Yyeah.

June 7th was when we found out the album and song titles. June 28th was when mixing and mastering finished and on June 29th, OTBOA was released as well as album artwork.

JLB finished his vocals for ADTOE back in April. So kinda behind last time around, but it seems to me that they took more time with this one.

Which I'm thrilled about. It seemed like DT was kinda playing it safe on the last album, I really feel like they're pulling together to create something very special.

Which made sense, considering the kind of a position the band was in at the time. But yes, I can't wait to see what they'll put out in the fall. I have a feeling it's not only gonna blow my mind, it's gonna blow my soul.

JP on Facebook says  "Just finished my final lyric for the new DT album. I start solos in about a week. Time to put down the pen and get to the woodshed!".

So that means vocals can't possibly be done and there are at least a couple of more weeks we know for sure that just the music itself can't possibly be finished. Now what that says to me is that they're writing and playing the crap out of the new album. That's a lot of effort. I would have to just guess it's the hardest (if not close to) they've worked on an album. I'm really excited. Even if it pushes the date back.
