I'm not worried, because the guy is essentially brilliant at whatever he does arrange. Really, really happy for him!  :tup

Orchestral arrangements have become a cliché in metal, but I bet (or at least hope) DT will be able to use them effectively. Eren is really lucky! :)

Yes! I'm double excited for DT12 now, if there's going to be orchestra.

*EDIT*

Dream Theater are better than most in incorporating orchestral arrangements into their music, I mean, look at Octavarium, Sacrificed Sons, all of Score (besides tuning problems at times), not to mention Jordan Rudess is a classically trained musician and composer. He also brings the prog most likely the most, and is quoted for not having much interest in metal music. DT are much more than a metal band. I wouldn't be surprised if this album is less on the metal and more on the prog, though heavy much of the time I'm sure. But I honestly don't know what they'll do on the next album now that there's going to be some symphonic music.

Well, that may be (I have no knowledge of it), but it's sure that DT never used an actual full orchestra in a studio record, if I'm not badly mistaken.

Octavarium used an orchestra, likely at least as big as they're using here.

saying orchestras have become cliche is like saying electric guitars have become cliche...

If you mean using an orchestra or electric guitar (or any other musical instrument or approach) for no reason other than filling up and beefing the sound, well that never became cliche, it's simply stupid and unoriginal every single time.

Yeah this, but I really liked the dimension the real orchestral sounds brought to that album, so this is cool news!

Why have they become a cliche?
Because almost everyone uses them (orchestral arrangements are slowly breaking into extreme metal, even) but everyone seems to use them because they love orchestral music, and not because they actually have an idea how to use them in their music. At least that's my stance as a metalhead who dislikes 90% of how orchestras are used in metal :lol

Eren Başbuğ.

From his Twitter:

"recording the parts I arranged for Dream Theater's new album. one of the most amazing moments of my life so far."

In that case I'm really excited. I love when bands bring in real a real orchestra instead of just doing it on the keyboard.

Also, didn't they use orchestra on the Six Degrees Overure? I have no idea if they did I just always thought they did.

Only on Score. In the studio it was all JR.

I don't mind orchestral instruments being used in metal.

What I don't like is when bands combine that female lead vocals.

This is very interesting. I just hope this orchestral stuff is not only for a ballad or something.

I would be extremely happy with some orchestral work over crazy instrumentations :metal

And that's why I seriously dislike that Overture. I like orchestral stuff in metal, but if it's done, it should be some real orchestra and not artificial and electronic parts.

Well said. A lot of lesser metal bands write a simple song and add orchestral instruments that just play the same simple chord progression, assuming that it will make their music sound grand and epic.

I want more bands to do what, for example, Haken did with the string quartet at the end of Visions :hefdaddy

I have no issue with it. It's actually the element that has made some metal tolerable to listen to. The band Red is a perfect example.
