I know it's just my musical snobbery speaking, but I always had more respect for drummers/percussionists who knew their way around tuned percussion.  Vibes, marimba, even bells.  Knowing notes and key signatures and stuff, versus just knowing how to hit things.  That's a totally oversimplified way of putting it, of course, but you know what I mean.
No, I think that's completely fair. It's an extra skill on top of the set of necessary skills - that's always a good thing. It's like saying "I have more respect for journalists who know shorthand." By no means necessary, and there are plenty of brilliant journalists who don't have a clue, but it's a cool skill that helps you excel and be adaptable at your job. Don't think it's snobbery at all. To drum is great, to drum in tune is fantastic.

Me :) played glockenspiel, timpanis and kit  know all my key sigs and write music as well, its a lot better understanding melodies and knowing whats going on than just 'hitting things'

I play drums, guitar, piano and did a degree in Music.

I know my C#m7b5 from my Db7b9 :P

Due to this : I heard The Silent Man today and could instantly play the first 5 chords without needing to work them out.

I love when that happens

I didn't mean to imply that it wasn't. It's just that, if they can churn that out in however many weeks it took to write, and they've taken a bit longer with this one, it's a good sign, right?  ;D

It may be a good sign but I think ADToE took a about the same time ?

Not saying ADToE was bad or anything but don't expect SDOIT part 2 just yet :)

ADTOE > SDOIT  ;D

I don't think I would be happy with a SDOIT part 2

SDOIT so thoroughly outclasses ADTOE on every level that it's not even funny.

That's exactly what I meant - if it had been trimmed down to fit a single disc, the album would've been more solid and compact with little to no filler (IMO).

I've thought that about other double disks, (Beatles The While Album---sorry Zy!)  But I looked as the second disk as one song or another album.  Maybe I had my DT colored glasses on but I get where you're coming from ?

No I agree with you here. I love the Beatles, but the White Album could use some trimming and become a greater single disc.

I am on ?'s side here, SDOIT would have highly benefitted from a slight trim, like you know, taking TGP out, or cutting out half of the suite.

TGP and SDOIT are DT's two best songs, you silly silly man. There is no track that you could cut from SDOIT. I'm glad they didn't have to fit it on one disc, because it would have missed out for it.
Meanwhile, I could happily cut half of ADTOE from existence and not miss it at all.

Now we are in agreement  Maybe the outro of Misunderstood could've been shortened as well - the guitar noise is kinda cool, but not an important part, and I hate the keyboard sounds in that section. It could've been a 100% excellent 7-minute song if the outro from the edit version had been used instead.

It could have rivaled with IAW and Awake with a similar tracklist, IMO:

1. The Great Debate
2. Blind Faith
3. Misunderstood
4. Disappear
5. Three Degrees Of Inner Turbulence

I don't agree with you on the tracklist because of the lack of TGP, but it's true that 6D would've had a lot of potential to rival Awake and I&W if it had been a single disc. Now it's just 6th (nuggetz!) in my ranking and probably won't go up.

That is a seriously deflated version of SDOIT. I may be able to speak for a few people in saying that without TGP, I would not have discovered DT or held any initial interest.

Yeah, I was really positively surprised at that poll. The only reason why SDOIT is not my top DT album is because IAW and Awake are way too good for anything to ever surpass them. But I adore SDOIT, it's got a lot of things going, and 90% of them are absolutely awesome.

Those polls (if you are hinting at the tournament) should not be taken into accounts when it comes to ranking albums, as inner matches were casually (and not uniformly) distributed.

I agree that TGP is a landmark song, and one that effectively was the manifesto of a whole age for the band as well as for the album itself... it's just that I can't stomach it. I tried several times in the past few years, but it's only a few cool candies floating in a paste of hate or indifference  :(

I took it from the latest "favorite DT album" poll, so it should be representative. Too bad the increase at 6D's popularity has happened at the expense of Awake :-\

Why don't we just revert back to talking about the new album? :D

Two years ago, if I remember correctly, the first festival dates of the summer tour were confirmed as early as December-January. It's obvious that the same didn't happen this time. Why do you think this might be?

Maybe they'll focus on headlining shows this time, or perhaps the festivals they'll play at will be in late summer?
