If i'm not mistaken Richard Chycki had the engineering-mixing duties on James' Elements Of Persuation, and in my opinion it was a very good sounding record, massive sounding but still a clear mix.

So i'm optimistic about the new album's sound, if he is involved in those duties.

Musical intercourse all round!

But yeah, should be a good record.
This is as exciting as superluminal neutrinos. The sexy thing is that this actually exists :D

I'm not familiar with Chycki, except for the fact he did LaBrie's vocals on ADTOE and Static impulse. Now that I found out he also recorded Clockwork angels, the guys can't go wrong with him. Nice pick.  :tup

Well, three members of the band put Clockwork Angels very highly in their Top 10 of 2012 lists, and it was recorded by Chycki! So good for them to get the recording engineer behind one of their favorite albums of 2012! This can only mean great things!!!

-Marc.

Somebody in the thread said that the sound of CA was at times muddy. Is that true or was it just an individual and isolated opinion?
I also agree. It sounds very muddy at times.

What I find interesting and pleasing is that apparently James's counsel about him as a eingineer/mixer (since I believe he was the only one to have had a musical intercourse with him) was taken into account and evantually accepted.  :tup
Marco wtf :lol :lol :lol :lol
WTF  :rollin

Regarding Clockwork Angels, Chyucky didn't mix or master the album. It was the producer, Nick Raskulinecz. Rich just recorded it.

I think he referred to not being able to work on the DVD because something got in the way (I remember those James tweets from last summer) but that he's working on the album now. Or something like that.

Not working on the DVD in loco, but he did his job at home with the recorded tracks, right?

Dammit can anyone who actually makes a difference between mixing, mastering, recording and engineering and who can make heads and tails over which guy was working on what release in the DT/prog world come hither and clarify everything since my head is in such a mess right now :lol

My friends Dream Theater performed to massive crowds at Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires on August 19 & 20, 2012 in support of their very well-received release, A Dramatic Turn Of Events. Unfortunately, a scheduling conflict didn't allow me to participate in the location recording but the mix is well underway here for the live DVD and the band's performance is absolutely stellar. More news coming soon!

recording - setting up mics, recording the sounds that come out, edit tracks, cut and paste pro tools (or tape if analogue is used)
mixing - putting together the recorded sounds from each instrument (some case for each track, like 24 microphones (24 tracks) from the drumset, keys, etc...)
mastering - leveling the sound equalizers to a constant level, fades ins/outs/, track sequence and ID.

I so did not see that one!
Also, he said stellar. I am going to love him forever now.

Thank you!

So who did what for DT11 (well, I can google that, but in line with opinions over how well done it was) and predictions/possible actual info for DT12?

Recorded: Paul Northfield
Mixed: Andy Wallace
Mastered: Ted Jensens
Everything Else: Maddi

Also, he said stellar. I am going to love him forever now.

What if it was him who originally planted the seed of stellarity in James?  :omg:

Those are very helpful definitions. Does anybody know what role JP plays in those processes as the producer?
Yeah, I have no idea what the cakeless person in that analogy is meant to be eating. If he's got some sort of cake substitute, it should really have been worked into the narrative at some point. As it stands, the options are:

  • Hoard a cake just to stare blankly into its doughy edifice.
  • Make futile chewing motions with your mouth while starving to death.

Yeah, that's what I wanted to ask as well. It's nice to finally know the difference between mixing and mastering and thanks for the info, but what's producing then?

Producing is like directing a movie. You oversee everything in order to try and achieve your vision of the full project. Wheter JP wanted ADOTE to sound like that is up for debate

He also did Flying Colors if I'm not mistaken.

The only problem I had with ADTOE was Mangini's snare sound. Can't stand it. Oh, and I wish the drums were a tad louder.

Can't wait for this production-wise. ADTOE sounds like crap, honestly, especially the drums. They sound compressed and horrible.
I only listen to electro-post dubprog.  You've probably never heard of it.

This is indeed a mistery, or for me at least. Cheering on the band? Providing Chai Latte for James to consume? Hiring a dedicate starbucks for JM? Fetching mammals, guineapiggin' for Jordan's apps?

From a quick Google, it seems to be JP's tech.

I hope that they don't hire Andy Wallace again for the mix. He mixed ADTOE like an ordinary metal record and a lot of details on the music are lost because of that.

Yes, Maddi is JP's guitar tech. He's the large bald dude who you see handing JP guitars and shit in between songs. He's seriously fucking awesome and obviously does A LOT more than just handing JP guitars. :tup
