I'm thinking of something more complex than a solo backwards guitar.

What is "solo backwards guitar?"  :lol

It's when you play the guitar with the string side turned toward you. Very hard to do.

...or maybe dparrott is just Misunderstood.  :neverusethis:

I'm thinking of something more complex than a solo backwards guitar.

How do you achieve something that is both "complex" but also "atmospheric soundscapes"? They seem to be two different things?

he could mean something with a little more depth or not as melodic? perhaps even a little more avaunt-grade.

I really would like to think that JP and JR have taken their playing to new places. I've always kind of felt that JP has really insulated himself in terms of being inspired by newer bands and music, and hasn't really brought much stylistically to the band with his playing for a while. And it shows in his interviews where he doesn't really give a comprehensive answer as to music he is currently listening to or being inspired by (with the exception being his top ten albums of 2012 (?)).
It's not really necessarily a bad thing, as JP almost has a distinct, signature style of playing which is a big part of the DT sound. Although i've found that the best parts of newer DT music is where they've taken their musical passages to newer places, which I honestly felt they did more of in BC&SL than in adtoe. JP and the gang are master musicians nonetheless, and i'm sure the album will be awesome regardless of how innovative it is.

Don't you think that Turn Of Events was purposefully safe though ?

Kind of a " we've been through a lot recently but we're still the DT you know and love ".

Yes, and I think it was the right thing to do. After TOT, Octavarium, SC, BC&SL and the drama surrounding MP's departure, ADTOE was exactly the album the band needed. Now they need an album like SFAM or SDOIT, something fresh and exciting. I'm sure that they are aware of that and that they're pushing for it.

I think I'm joining podaar on it.
Misunderstood solo was wrote and play normally then the computer reversed the solo to sound like it was backward played. For information that technique was used by the Beatles on the George's Harrison song I'm only sleeping . I love that guitar style. The misunderstood solo is one of the most original dt solo

John wrote it, and recorded it... then played it in reverse on the computer and learned how to play it in reverse :D
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

He wrote it, recorded it, reversed it, learned it in reverse, recorded that, then reversed THAT recording, so it's playing the melody he originally wrote, but it sounds backwards. That's what happened. Jason Becker did the same thing back in the 80's.

JP is my favorite musician and can do no wrong but he does seem to have fallen in love with modern tones and mixes. That comparison to the chocolate cake almost concerned me a little because it seems to play into that tonality even more.
Personally I would love to see him go back towards his tones on LTE but those albums were part of his Ibanez era which isn't coming back.

I just hope he doesn't sound as scooped as on ADTOE. That (rhythm) tone really lacked something, probably due to the mix. It just didn't have enough punch. I happen to have the JPXI-7 myself, and it sounds nothing like that unless I really start screwing with the EQ. I honestly think that my tone with that guitar is better than the ADTOE one, and I'm a bassist using an amp simulator. The actual playing though, that's a whole different story.

Not misunderstood, but I wasn't very clear.  To put it in a way you might understand, I wish JP would do some "FRIPP-ISH" parts.  His musical composition but with multiple layers of ambient guitar, maybe with JR additions sprinkled in.

Back to topic. For me, it's just like Blob : wait and see. ADToE was a move in the right direction for me but a little too safe. Now MM has been involved in the whole creating process, let's see what he has brought to the table. Sometimes, what he does is very technical, but it doesn't "move" me, if you see what I mean. And I want to be moved by the music...

And yeah, I definitely agree that it's quite exciting to see what will happen with DT's sound this time around. ADTOE had the excitement of a new member, but while the music was wonderful, it was undoubtedly safe. And I agree with people who say it completely made sense to do that (it's my second favourite DT album) but now it's time to kick things up a bit.

Yeah, I think ADTOE was purposely safe, but I think and hope that on DT12 they'll have a bit more experimentation. Remember, they're playing with an orchestra for a part of the album (or maybe the whole thing), so that might make the music a bit more new and fresh, even though they've played with an orchestra before.

From a recent JR interview:

"The way I see it is like, he’s such a specialist in his area. He’s got such a rhythm math brain and that addition to what Dream Theater already has in the composition department was so cool, ’cause we’ve been able to do things I’ve never done before. There’s some stuff on the album that I’ll rhythmically is very, very cool."

So there is definitly going to be som new stuff that they have not done before on the album.

I think it would be cool if he toyed around with some more "organic" metal tones, in a similar fashion to Meshuggah:Koloss/Animals as leaders:weightless/latest intronaut album and yeah them LTE lead guitar tones that would be awesome :P.
Although in term's of his tone i'm not expecting anything different from the previous album; which is a shame for me as a part of me is hoping that he has been paying attention to whats been happening in the musical community in terms of these newer wave of proggy metal bands and has taken a page from their book (tonally and musically) to keep it relevent in respect to modern prog metal (inspired/derived) music.
