DT album ranking

Even though I've posted my rankings a few times over the years, I was going to just post them again since they might have changed (or I might never have posted them in this particular thread. However, after a quick search I find that the list I was going to post is almost exactly the same as the last time I posted in this thread:

I would perhaps rank Systematic Chaos above FII, though it is a tough call. Mandatory to say I suppose that ranking all these albums, apart from WDADU, is hard. Particularly assigning the lowest ranks, as I love all those albums (and particular songs from those albums are among my favourites of all time) even in the 8-11 group.

Top 4 is Top 4 for life it seems. The last four, unfortunately, have not been able to come close to anything that came before it, though I still enjoy most of the songs and albums. The middle four shift around all the time. Scenes could be 8th as much as FII could be 5th.

I would not be surprised if I've already posted in this thread and it's completely different.

Also, people putting WDaDU last need to clean out their ears and listen to the SONGS, and not the production. That's easily one of DT's most inspired records.

Fuck that. I'd say anyone with ADTOE in their top 5 and WDADU any place but last has a wrong opinion.

I know it's all opinions but, as for me, it still kinda irks me when i see a DT fan ranking one of the big four albums low on their list. I can't help it.

I really love each album from 1 through 4. I listen to them from beginning to end, and maybe again shortly after.

From 5 and 6 I listen not so frequently, but they are at least very good - I can listen to them any time of the day and there is many great things on them, at least a couple of great sounds, some inspired performances, etc.

7 to 9 are albums I would probably skip some songs, rarely I´ll listen them from beginning to end, but I could listen to a lot of it. But there is a thousand of better things to do.

9 there is a couple of songs I like, but not that much. The reamining songs I don´t like at all.

10, 11 and 12 I just can´t bear, I would rather listen to When in Rome or Wham! than listen to them.

I love lists like this! I love albums 1-10 and play them all the time. 11 is not bad either but I listen to it less. 12 I hardly listen to.

Dream Theater have always been putting out excellent material, so it's hard to do a proper ranking. Here's the best I came up with, whenever you see a space there's a decrease in my appreciation but the albums grouped together could almos switch places and the difference wouldn't be THAT big.

It's been several months since I ranked these. Been listening to the CDs I skipped out on.. I seriously tried, but can still find nothing that grabs me on some of these. However, ADTOE and DT12 have grabbed my attention. So, here is my "new" ranking

I realize I am an oddball on here for ranking WDADU so high, but it was my first and only DT CD for a few years (until I&W cam out). If it was a cassette, I would have worn it out several times over. Awake is and always will be my favorite. Too old and busy now to listen to a CD as much as I listened to Awake.

I cannot rank the rest as I have not heard them. I took a hiatus from any new DT after ToT. I did not like it at all.I thought the last decent DT album was Six Degrees. However, after stumbling across a youtube video of Space Dye Vest, which nearly had me in tears, I decided to grab the DVD Breaking the Fourth Wall. That got me to buy the self titled album... I have a renewed hope. I may go back through the others to see what I missed..

I started doing this, but they have released so many albums now it's getting hard to rank them all! 

Awake and 6DOIT are at the top, though. WDADU and ADTOE at the bottom, followed closely by SC.

All the others are a bit random in between.

This is tough, and not all of these are definite. But for me (in terms of which ones are my favorite, if I listed them by which ones I thought were the best/most musically innovative it would be different) it would be something like:

But that isn't to say that the lower ones are bad, I think every Dream Theater album is great and I listen to most of them more than most of my other music. It would be interesting for someone to generate a graph based on the average of everyone here's rankings.

425 did that some time ago. The general consensus of the forum and album order is pretty similar to my own ranking. . The only big difference is that Images and Words is number 1º overall.

I think my tastes have changed since I was last active on the forums. So this is more of an update:

1. SFAM - Hasn't changed, never will. Home and FF are better than ever. Best album of all time.
2. SDOIT - Took a leap! For some reason, I appreciate Misunderstood more than ever. Despite disc 2 becoming less enjoyable over time, Disc 1 has risen enough to propel this to #2.
3. Octavarium - Haven't listened to the epic much lately, but some of the other less appreciated tracks like TW and NE have made a comeback.
4. ADTOE - Took a fall from #2 to #4. I don't know...it is still great. But a few of the songs have become skip songs lately.
5. I&W - As I get older, I think this will keep rising. I think it's because as I mature, I appreciate the style of songwriting of their earlier work.

The bottom 6 have kinda been on the shelf for awhile. They are all great, but I think I played the hell out of some of them, and the others were just never favorites.
